View Full Version : Potential site layout
http://design.frequencyproductions.com
One of the most creative sites I've come up with on my own... It's just a layout so far. I created the layout, then forgot to put a menu in, so I just threw in what's there.
What do you all think, and what can I improve?

I like the layout quite a bit, but the colors bother me a little. I'm not a big fan of dark backgrounds and your menu on the right is a little hard to see with the binary behind it in the same color. It blurs things a little. Just my 2 cents... I'm not a pro or anything.

Generally I like it. I dig the font choice and I think, for some reason, the font's "weathered" appearance fits nicely with your color scheme.
I don't mind dark backgrounds as acadisk mentioned, however I agree that the menu on the left is hard to distinguish from it's background image. It's obviously *readable* however it's hard on the eyes.
I would do a couple of things, such as...
Make the binary significantly lighter. It is a background image and should be more in the *background*.
Consider putting those same menu items on the *left* as it would be more standard, from a user interface point of view, then it's position now.
Perhaps introduce another dominant color (other than black/white/blue).
You've obviously put a lot of effort in to the design. Try to push it a little further even if it means finding a website with a similar style that you think is better than what you currently have and emulate some of it's design ideas (without out-and-out stealing). :)
Specifically I'd concentrate on the background image behind your header (currently a grid), the blue bars you're using vertically and horizontally as seperators, and lastly the horizontal row of circles that acts as the top header seperator.
One last note, and this is just a personal preference, so take it with a grain of salt. I'd center the layout. Everyone thinks about 800x600 users and makes sure to design a site that accomodates their resolution. But no one thinks about us 1600x1200 users who's heads are permanently twisted from reading left-aligned sites. :)

I lightened the text (binary) on the background, which in turn caused the menu to be more distinguishable.

It's somewhat easier to read now... I like how you moved the menu to the top of the main box. There does seem to be quite a bit of empty space now, though, especially on larger screen sizes than 800X600. I might even go a little lighter on the background... almost as light as you can make it with it still being distiguishable. The main body text is a little small... a size or two larger would help make it easier to read. The link text in the light blue is easier to read than the main white text - the white text seems to run together.

I hit reload and noticed you made the change... that made it much easier to read... it doesn't seem to run together as much anymore.

:D I was just replying to your message when your last post came in, thanks for the comments.
I'm running on 1024x768, and I kind of like the open space. I may add something in the future, but for now, I want to leave it as is. I did try to make the binary figures lighter, but any more than how it is makes it fairly illegible, even it is 1's and 0's.

I like the design quite well, it IS different and good looking. Agree that binary should be very subtle and find a font that is like the type on the bottom of a check, looks good for that. very nice job.
one thing on the comment of using a black background, i don't mind that except when someone is using it on something that needs to be printed, oh i hate that. if you arent showing anything that will be printed out, hell it's just easier to read on a monitor. very different, very creative.
Thanks everyone for the comments, it's no longer a potential layout, I'm running with it.
Cool...
ONe thing though, if I see another site with Black Background and Blue...I'm gonna shoot someone :)
The design is great, layout great, But the coclors. I don't like (just my opinion). I see way too many sites out there using the same sort of color scheme and it is getting annoying. If you have some extra webspace, maybe setup a duplicate test site in a sudirectory and do some color change testing. You might find some color scheme you like better.
Good Job,
mikem
Extremely good idea, I think I might do that... Good colour selection is something I'm not good at and I always end up with blue. I tried an entire different layout with a white background, but I couldn't get anything to look like it belonged there. I don't like white backgrounds, with a few exceptions. They usually appear that the designer just forgot to put a background colour. Same with white cars, they look like they haven't been painted yet...

Cool, well that is just what I do. Create a folder in your htdocs and then point to it with your htaccess file
example :
testsite.yoursite.com
Folder is testsite.
Then you can do some serious testing...works great....Lets us knwo when you come up with something new...:) possibly
Here it is
Blue (Original): http://design.frequencyproductions.com
Green: http://design2.frequencyproductions.com
Red: http://design3.frequencyproductions.com
Red is...OK, green is too bright, I'll experiment with more colours later. Let me know what you all think.
