View Full Version : Help! newbie....
Hi there!
I just joined powweb a couple of days back... I just don't know how to get started!
I have access to all my OPS, though I am still not sure if my domain registered right since it still says pending though it looks like a already bought it.
my site is www.havenofmythos.com
Now I looked into the ftp using CuteFTP and I see a index.html do i have to put that in one of the folders? nothing shows up when I type in my address at all.
thank you so much for your help....

If you are seeing that its pending then you have to wait but as far as your question related to where you need to upload your "index" page in order to see it through your domain that is /htdocs on your server.
Thanks

Athena, what a nice name!
Your domain name still shows to be available. When it goes from pending to active. It will then take 24/72 hrs for your domain name to propagate accross the internet so all can see it.
Until then you have a temp addy
havenofmythoscom.powweb.com (http://havenofmythoscom.powweb.com)
You should have 3 folders on the server.
cgi-bin>for scripts
htdocs>for your viewable files
logs>your log files
Ahh thank you soo much!
Excellent service, cleared things up.... I'll wait for the pending to go away then....

Hi there!
Ok so finally my status on my domain has gone from Pending to Active. I have tried to type in the url on IE and it still doesnt show up, but it does show on http://havenofmythoscom.powweb.com.
Does this mean I have to wait the 24/72 hours for me to see the actual site? sorry if this has already been answered, just need to clarify...
thanks.

if your gonna play with DW, at least DWMX i find is far to complex, i much prefer Net Object Fusion, it is really user friendly
Unless you know DW very well what you can do in 1/2 hour in NO will take you 3 Hrs in DW
Hmm, thanks for the heads up I will look into it.

I think Dreamweaver is SIMPLE. Even more so that Frontpage.
If you have DW, I would use it. You'll like it. It's all a learning process anyways. :)

True.
I started using 3, then 4, I have MX installed, but don't use it as much.
So I guess I use DW 4. Definately like it best.

i thought dw4 was pretty cool then i thought wow look at all the amazing techno cool stuff in mx, then i realised i hadn't got a clue how to use it, and probably would never need all the enhanced features, i mean for god's sake you can even create timelines and actionscript in mx
NO is ideal for the simple stuff i put together, the style sheets are good and extensive and easily modified. In general once you create your site changing the whole look is a simple couple of mouse clicks, maybe a bit of repositioning
i think dw's templates are very thin, ok dw is designed for serious web developers but i still think they could have included more pre made template sites that you can then customize, it saves so much time and really helps to learn how to use a product if you can fire up a ready made site and then adapt it to your liking
i am rambling now, i shall shut up....
