Ocasionaly when I save a website into favourites with IE 6 it saves a small icon instead of the blue "e"
How can I do this ?
Thx.
Something like this:
<link rel="SHORTCUT ICON" href="http://poeticpollution.net/favicon.ico">
in between your <HEAD></HEAD> tags.. :)
Oops... of course you'll need to make the icon first! Icon Digger is my favorite:
http://monsternet.game-point.net/goodies/icon_digger_2000.htm
Actually, if you name the icon favicon.ico then you do not need the <link rel="SHORTCUT ICON" href="http://yourdomain.com/favicon.ico"> in the <head> tags. All you need to do is place it into your htdocs folder and it will appear for any page of your site that someone bookmarks.
You only need to use that if you use a different name for your icon. Which comes in handy if you want different icons for your different pages.
Also, IE is the only browser to support favicons (unless the new NS does)
If you want to know more, check out http://www.favicon.com/ I think they still offer a time limited version of Icon Forge to make your own favicons.
Just my "For What It's Worth"
Good points (jj), things I did not know. I was just going by the Microsoft suggestion which I found here:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/workshop/author/dhtml/howto/shortcuticon.asp
More intense reading on that page notes that Each time your Web page is added to a user's favorites, Internet Explorer automatically searches for this file and places the icon next to all the favorites and quick links originating from your site.
As far as I know, all of the open source Mozilla based web browsers support the favicon including the 0.4 Phoenix browser I'm on now. The Mozilla base goes so far as adding the icon to its bookmarks everytime you visit the page, even after you dump your cache. IE doesn't automatically relink them or at least 6.0.2 doesn't.

Have now got .ico generator from above:

As Photoshop.. well, Photoshop v5 pro can't "save copy as" .ico Thanks for the concise info guy's. Appreciate your time.

Something I did not learn at Microsoft.101 ... Funny that ...

but the favicon thing applies as suggested by jj if the home page is bookmarked and a favicon.icon is present in "htdocs". grahm's suggestion is to support other than home pages that are bookmarked. However, if all your html documents are in a htm whatever folder and the favicon is also resident in that folder then it might work as jj suggests and much like jj's site structure. grahm's suggestion mitigates the propagation of the favicon.icon to all folders. For those who's site has more than one folder.

is present in the html code. Don't know for sure as I haven't done thorough testing. A favicon.ico in each folder might be the solution as well but I only have one in my root htdocs folder so I'm unsure.
Croc Hunter, are you suggesting Microsoft.101 is a bit biased in their lectures? ;)

If it works in Mozilla 1.1+, it will work in NetScape 6.2 and 7.0.
Try this with your IE:

after you bookmark it reload.
Woops, I take that back. Mozilla 1.1 and NetScape 7.0 show some signs of recognition but I found none in NetScape 6.2.
Works perfect.. :)

I experimented bookmarking other than my index.htm(l) and IE6 tagged all .htm(l) with my favicon.ico in my htdocs folder. I suspect the same might be true if a folder other than htdocs is used and it contains a favicon.ico (potentially multiple favicons).

The favicon.ico is working great JJ. I made and loaded one for each of my 3 mainstream sites and will code individual pages, time and budgets permitting. Once (re)saved in favorites it even appears in the IE Address bar. Neat. Am having a little trouble getting all 3 up, in my IE 6.1 browser at least.
http://www.fagaleo.com/favicon.ico Seating is up.
http://www.backstophouse.com/favicon.ico ?
http://www.users.bigpond.com/streetsie/favicon.ico ?
Everyone needs a bit of eye candy from time to time :)
If you have trouble getting them to display in IE, sometimes you have to clear your cache, remove the bookmark and re-bookmark the page, then refresh/reload to get them to display.
One bad thing is, that every time you clear your cache you will lose all of your favicons.
I picked up a little (free) program called FavOrg from the PC Magazine (http://www.pcmag.com/) site that searches your bookmarked sites, finds all of the favicons and saves them in their own data folder. That way I don't lose them everytime I clear cache.
Eye Candy, so much fun and no tooth decay :D

FavOrg checks the validity of an Internet shortcut before attempting to download the favicon, it automatically flags dead links as it goes through your Favorites list, it can also update redirected links or reset dead links to the site's root, and more! If you are not a member of PC Magazine be prepared to give more than a smile for the download. It will be interesting to see how well this tool maintains the favicons but for now my favorites look much more interesting than M/S eTreatment. If it can be ugly Microsoft will find it. Good link jj. Hope you posted it in the Forum's Utilities section.
