I just set up my web page a couple days ago. When I log on to it it shows the Under construction page poweb sets up. But, I created a basic page in Frontpage 2000 and published it successfully, still, poweb's under construcion shows up. Can someone tell me what I did wrong? Thanks, Joe

When you uploaded your website, did you have your FrontPage extensions enabled, did you upload the files inside the htdocs folder on your site, and did you remove (or overwrite) the default Powweb index.html page?

If you have done those, your site should be visible to you.

Come on back if you need more help

I do have extentions installed, I am not sure how to delete the poweb page and when publishing from front page, I don't know how to send to the htdocs folder. Thanks for your help Joe

Let's give it a shot Joe.

First, do you have a FTP (file transfer protocol) client? Like CuteFTP, WS_FTP, LeechFTP, etc? Check User Help Documentation at the top of this page then click on tutorial and then look for FTP and check them out. There are links on the individual FTP pages to the various programs.

You're going to your site with the FTP program to hopefully find two files. One will be index.htm and the other will be index.html. One of those two is the PowWeb under construction page. The other one is the one you created in FP. (I always vote for rename, just in case you want it back) :)

Now here's were get a bit fuzzy since I don't have FP on this computer. PowWeb's index page and FP's index page will have different extenstions (one will be .htm and the other will be .html). FP did not overwrite PW's page, but when you type your domain name, there is a hierarchy in the order which pages load... somehting like .htm, .html, .shtm, .shtml, whatever. The point is that the server is loading the page that meets this hierarchy first. In this case it's PW's. When you go to your site in the FTP program find the index file under the htdocs subfolder that is PW's and either rename it, or delete it. All should be good then.

I dont know FrontPage. There is a help section dedicated to FrontPage useage and issues in this Forum where specific "how to" questions might get answered. I am going to bet that if you did a search you would find your answers there in that section already.

In the meantime, I would find it hard to believe that with FrontPage you can not scan the destination folder for uploading your files, or specify it in your configuration. Simply put, your destination for uploading your files with any FTP application, whether it is a standalone FTP app or one inside of FrontPage, has to be configurable.

Good luck again. Sorry I dont have your answer, but I am pretty sure you uploaded your website to the wrong place. htdocs is the directory that Powweb's servers look into to get your pages to server them to the web. That is where the default index.html is located. If your file is also labeled index.html, then it should ask you if you want to over write the one that exists already. That will fix your troubles when you get yourself pointed to the right place.

OK Joe, I've started a PM response to your PM to me, but in the mean time...

You have a FTP program now. Basically the caveat on using FTP and FP is that anything you do that affects something that uses the FP extensions results in serious site-us hose-us up-us :) I first published my site using FP, but do all the routine maintenance via FTP, so not to worry.

We're going to use the FTP to just go and look at your site. At the root (when you start the FTP) you should have 4 folders. cgi-bin, etc, htdocs and logs. Get into the htdocs folder. There you should have an index file. This is the file that the server will load first when your domain name is typed in. Let's start there. If you do, what is the name of the file? index.htm, index.html? Do you have a file named default.*? If so what is the extension? How do you feel about starting from scratch if we have to? Did you put your site together locally (on your computer) and then upload, such that you still have everything, should we need to go back to square one? Are you comfortable setting up a temporary FTP account such that you could give me a username and password (via PM) in order that I might go take a look see. Promise no touchy anything:) Then after we get this baby rolling, you just kill the account and my access.

Not to worry Joe, when I started here last year, using FP and FTP I knew shinola about how to do any of this. Some would argue, that I don't know much more now, but Joe, we'll get through this :)

I just clicked on your www icon in your original post. I got to The Ostrich Store. If that is your site that is in question, then it looks like your up :) If not :( then we'll keep kicking it around. These web sites, folders, scripts and all of it is like a 1940's Bogart woman... slap 'em around a bit and they'll come through. As I run, duck and cover... wow I hope Laurey isn't reading this thread!! :):):):)
