There's a nice step by step tutorial for adding streaming real audio to your site on the Powweb support pages.

Here's the link to the tutorial

Ok I did read that before i posted Here, but I cant understand anything about how to do this: If anyone would be so kind to give me step by step instructions on how to perform this task, i would really appreciate it, I am new at all this, but I am learning. right now i have it as a wav file, and it doesnt play well in media player takes a while to load all the way, and if you try and play it before it is loaded, it skipps.. so i would like to do as the bottom says, but for the life of me i havent the slightest ideal what its talking about doing from beginning to end..lol.. thank you for your help.. witness7

Streaming Real Media Via HTTP

Streaming files means that the RealAudio and RealVideo files begin playing before the entire file is downloaded. RealAudio and RealVideo files can be quite large and many people surfing the web would not wait to see the entire file download before it started playing. This can be done with HTTP streaming.

If you choose to FTP this file and edit it on your local machine with a text editor (such as notepad), be sure you FTP it in ASCII mode since it is a text file.

Upload your encoded RealAudio and RealVideo files (files with the .rm and .ra extensions) to your account using FTP. Be sure to FTP these files in Binary mode.

Use a text editor to create a metafile containing a RealAudio or RealVideo URL. For example, the contents of your metafile should be in the following form:

http://yourdomain.com/path/filename.rm

Save the metafile as a text file with the .ram extension. For example:

filename.ram
Then FTP this file to your Virtual Server in ASCII mode (because it is a text file).

In your HTML document, reference the metafile in a hyperlink. For example:

<A HREF="filename.ram">
<A HREF="http://yourdomain.com/path/filename.ram">
You can use relative or complete paths. If you use complete paths, you must include both the hostname and the complete path.

When a user clicks on the link, the audio/video file(s) begin to download. The RealPlayer begins playing after a few seconds; it does not need to wait for the entire file to be downloaded.

Here are some more resources:
http://www.eiu.edu/~mediasrv/html-tutorial/sound.html

http://commtechlab.msu.edu/sites/letsnet/noframes/bigideas/b9/b9u6l1.html

Essentially, you need to use the <a href=""> HTML tag. - e.g., <a href="concerto.wav"> Brandenburg Concerto </a>

You should include a short description of the sound, including type, size and length of time the sound will play so that visitors can decide if they want to click the link to play the sound.

If it's a background sound that you want to have play automatically, use the embed tag:
<embed src="concerto.wav" autostart="true" loop="true"></embed>

hi

you need to encode the wav file first

you can do this in helix real producer

i have a tutorial on my site

altogether it is a long process of encoding and

making the .ram file

so youll need two tutorials

http://www.neutron1.com/tutorials/tutorials_index.htm

look for these two

Encoding .rm files encoding with real producer
Real media how to stream .rm audio files

one thing ive stupidly forgot is the address to get
real producer ill go and have a look

here it is

Not too long ago I was thinking about putting streaming audio on my site and found it a product specific task. Mainly focused on NetScape requirements and "Real"/ram or whatever. This plays for about 6% of the internet. The other 94% use IE and Windows Media Player. So I said, why fight it. Media Player 7.0 automatically streams the .wav files on my site and streaming with Real excluded the use of Media Player ( and testing Real and ram files on my PC blew up my Windows98 SR2). In other words I was busting my hump to exclude 94% of the internet. Not a wise thing for me to do. So if your surfing and wonder why they are always wanting to have you download "Real" it might mean that's the only thing that will play their .ram/.rm. Please let me know if I'm wrong here.

true
real player is the only player (legal one)
that will play .rm .ram files
maybe its true that windows has more video
on the net so to speak but id wager more people
having an old real player than the
new windows media player 7

im just guessing like anyone ,but what threw me
was looking at what had been downloaded
off my site

---------------------

streaming_example.zip realmedia 3
streaming_example2.zip windows 2

Darkstorm_vid_real_256k_streaming realmedia 3
Darkstorm_vid_windows_256k_streaming windows 0

13.1 meg .rm neutron darkstorm video.zip realmedia 3
12.8 meg .wmv neutron darkstorm video.zip windows 5
---------------

i found it surprising that more people had preferred
to stream real media
instead of using windows even though
theres an equivalent for both

going off my figures real media
seems more popular as a whole
at least more than 6%

no i dont get it either :(

going off my figures real media seems more popular as a whole at least more than 6% Yes I think your right. Real is more popular than 6%. I could install and use Real with my IE6 but I have not. But I could. Some part of the 94%, or 96%, that use IE and do not have MultiMedia 7 installed probably do use Real to listen to streaming media and those are the ones that would visit a site that has Real streaming music. Such as yours. I totally respect Real and streaming media. But it does exclude those who use MultiMedia. Even MultiMedia 7. The real, the other real, question is what percentage of the internet have MultiMedia 7 installed. That's the real gotya.

P.S. don't tell Terrell I used a special text color on this post. He thinks that is weird.

You could do worse than download Streambox Ripper.

It's free now, as it's no longer supported, and it will 'save as' MP3 or WMA files.

Others have written all that needs to be said about RealAudio, and I find the WMA files to be most popular, and better quality than MP3.

Download it here (http://www.afterdawn.co.uk/software/audio_software/audio_tools/streambox_ripper.cfm#download) if you want to try it out, and remember.........

A hell of a lot of people still have 56k access, so generally try to output at around 22k stereo, and everyone will be able to stream them easily.

You'll get some idea of the wma quality at 22k here (http://www.bad-hair-day.com/music.htm)

My MultiMedia 7 streamed your examples/selection just fine. If I did not have MultiMedia 7, say version 5 or 6, would these files still stream or would they have to be downloaded before play begins.

No problems with Windows Media Player 6, that's what I have, and it streams perfectly.

As first mentioned, I don't know a thing about streaming audio but got an ear full last night from various internet subject searches. It seems that audio on the internet was another Microsoft Johnny come lately. Most Microsoft internet is Johnny come lately. And Bill Gates is such a visionary, ha! AOL and RealAudio were the big dogs and a few alternative puppies. Enter Microsoft and IE5. They included Window Media Player 7 with all versions since released. This implies 96% of the internet is streaming media enabled by Media Play 7 or better except for those who have opted for RealAudio (not a small number but I still don't know what percent of the internet). The key here being, are you a listener, or a provider, or a collector. I'm a listener. My first internet capable PC was/is a 24k modem GateWay G6 that has a great sound card and speakers system, very advanced for it's time, I used to surf and listen to .mids. I always loved the better quality of .wavs but was able to fine a precious few. I was/am to busy to grow my taste to MP3 and Napster. I do how ever have a nice collection of CDRoms. So What. Well from time to time I have had music options on my web sites. Always .mids until now. I now have only .wavs and they are tres large for a 24k modem (I have ADSL on my current internet PC but a lousy speakers and sound card). So enter my thoughts about streaming my small .wav selection but found Media Player 7 does that for me. Game, set, and match. I'm not a provider nor a collector. But the internet audio/video game is just starting. Media Player 8 was issued with Windows XP. It packages all the audio tool providers previously had to assemble from various sources and plays better than Real by 25%. It still does not support MP3 ripping (I don't know one about ripping but it sounds neat). And again, but, Media Player 9 , in beta, is going back to being browser enabled. Not that Media Player 8 is not browser enabled it just is not issued with IEx. Enter the .wma format verse MP3 and MP4. And now turn to the next chapter. Bottom line for WebMasters, 96% of the internet is multimedia streaming enabled, intervene at you own risk (or something like that).

P.S. I find my .wav files download 16% - 20% before playing and play at 20k - 24k bit/seconds. Sounds reasonable to me.

if youre well up on javascript
you could probably find out how many people
have media player 7

<script type="text/javascript">
<!--
document.write('<img src="/cgi-bin/myscript/myscript.pl?trans.gif&ref=');
document.write(document.referrer);
document.write('" height="1" width="1" alt="" />');
// -->
</script>

this captures info and sends it to a pl script

im wondering if anyone is brainy enough
to send it to see what media player you have
that would be cool :)

I don't know one about ripping but it sounds neat

it is neat and free i used an mp3 ripper to encode
my own music album
from .wav to .mp3s
its just like real producer only instead of .rm files
its .mp3 files

it does it very fast from cd or hard drive
all you do is tick the tracks and press go
it will add allsorts of hidden info
into your music like who its by when it was made
the name of your album etc etc
and any copyrights you may have

The closer I get HTML to DOM the happier I am. I use JavaScripts but tune to cause and effect rather than a plan and results. When I wonder about internet percentages/usages of this and that I would never use my site as a typical example. For sure it is not.

P.S. But thanks for the suggestion.

The one I mentioned does the same, with the option of wma encoding, and it has a Graphic equaliser built in too.

The only reason I choose wma format is the fact that a 22k wma sounds the equivalent of around a 48k MP3, and just about everyone can stream the 22k wma files without any hassle, apart from the odd bit of net congestion.

That could possibly be changed in the player 'properties'.
There's normally an option there to set the buffer size before it starts to play.

Just to add a bit of info into the pot, per my stats.. below is the media player breakdown on my site:

58% NetShow Player (what is this you ask? heck if I know)
16% Real Audio or Compatible
14% WinAmp
6% Windows Media Player
6% Some XAudio Engine based MPEG Player

This surprises me.. as 89.1% of my users use IE, 3.9 NS and 4.3 are 'unknown). I would think the Windows media player would be MUCh higher (maybe NetShow is another report for the Win media player???).

anyway.. some statistical info to do whatever you want with...

It's getting as rare as Swallows in January by the look of things.

I spent a while looking around my old haunts and found this information (http://www.sonicspot.com/streamboxripper/streamboxripper.html) about it being free after version 2.011. I had a quick look around Google, and there would appear to be several Chinese download sites that have 2.011 available.

I only wish I could actually read the rest of what they say about it........

If you can't get it sorted, have a look here (http://5star.freeserve.com/Music/AudioEncodersandConverters/audio-convert.html) at Audioconvert, which costs $29.95 and does a helluva lot more than Streambox Ripper can.

There's a 30 day trial available there, but I'm not sure whether it's disabled in any way.

I have a request into Steambox Support to validate my copy but if they do not reply I'll grab your suggested AudioConvert v2.0. Either way I need not ever worry about having quality music for my site. I need only worry about the Hollywood PC Storm Troopers. Ain't life great.

Note: Some how Steambox improved the sound quality of the .wav files I resampled/ripped to .wma. As you suggested, 22k bits works fine but I did notice a quality improvement at 32k. I might use 32k unless you have a reason I should not.

The only reason I use 22k is because it will stream very well on 56k connections, whereas 32k can be a bit of a problem.
There are still millions of people like myself who don't have broadband available to them :(

It's a matter of personal choice, but you could have the option of 22k and say, 48k available as a choice for those without and those with broadband.

A bit more work, sure, but pleasing to 'all' visitors.

Is it possible to get my trial version of Steambox Ripper 2.011
registered to use. Thanks either way. It's a very nice application.

Their reply:
Sorry, Streambox Inc. doesn't sell or distribute Ripper/VCR product
anymore, due to legal settlement with RealNetworks.

Their reply speaks well for the support of the products they do now sell.

BHD & Blurchy: Thanks again for your insights and help. I think my next phase is to explore Advanced Systems Format/.asf streaming. I should be able to do that without much problems from the CDRom police and copy rights.

Note: I downloaded AudioConvert and it is much more than Steambox. So far I have not been able to configure/specify .wma file descriptive information and somehow it retains and applies previous .wav conversion information about album title, author/artist and song title. So I'm not yet an expert.

have u tried windows media encoder

its the best one to goto .wma

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/wm7/encoder.asp

in fact i once used this to stream live mp3s

through my computer ip number

just before my geo site was shut down

due to using too much bandwidth

i streamed an mp3 3 or 4 times

through this webage to some people
and bam they cut me site off for an hour

your site must be popular lol lol

and I know you do it on purpose. I believe the URL you have provided is for MediaPlayer 8. It's issued with Windows XP and it's XP specific (I use Windows98 SR-2). I have AudioConvert, on a 15 day trial, to do my file conversions. I'm headed down the asf path and have written and tested my first .asx document. I have yet to upload it but will tomorrow. I'll let you know so you might look at it.

geocities sent me a letter saying congratulations on your site exceeding its bandwidth
does not surprise me. You usually excel at what you do, ha! Microsoft promises you can asf all day long. If you have the bandwidth and storage but AudioConvert does a good compression job. A CDRom tune might take 36mb and AudioConvert will create a .wma < 1mb (as I'm sure you well know).

for 5 minutes and I get slapped around. What do you mean asf is one of the older streaming methods, lol. It's new to me and I understand it is slated to replace both the AVI and WAV multimedia file formats under Microsoft Windows®. Right now my testing is being delayed. I'm trying to figure out where my MediaPlayer embedment <object> should be placed (I'm also trying to stream from the server rather than downloading and buffering).

New Note: With the release of Windows Media Technologies 7, expected in Summer 2000, ASF is being replaced by WMV (Windows Media Video) and WMA (Windows Media Audio). The newer WMV files will be encoded with MPEG4 only. Older ASF files will still play using the new Windows Media Technologies 7 Player. The newer WMV files can be played back currently using Windows Media Player version 6.4.

This is interesting because I converted my .wma to .asf - going from the new to the old. I'm not an expert yet! Is that laughter I hear in the background.

with those who might be curious, that I used to obscure the MediaPlay face and prevent the download of the streamed file into WINDOWS\TemporaryInternetFiles. I'm sure this is old hat for some but not all of us. I target the rendering of the html document in the tunes menu iFrame. There is nothing magic about the OBJECT's id parameter. You could call it Gramophone if you like. I used the same folder for all components but you could also use virtual URLs. I'm still working on finding a PARAM NAMEs definitions list.

I'm working on a AbbA juke box. I use a .asx file to queue several tunes and when I render it via a html document on my PC/local I get a full screen MediaPlayer with a menu of tunes identified by the .asx content. Great, but when I put it on the internet I can not, do not get, the fully screen MediaPlayer menu but I can forward and backward the tunes. Any ideas on how to get a full screen MediaPlayer. Are you working on a giant cursor to match your giant scrollbar(s), lol.

When I render the .asx locally/PC I get the full screen/menu treatment that I want but when I link it with the html the full screen in minimized, which is no surprise, and when I render the .asx on the internet it just goes duh and displays the text items. So if I can get the html to give me a full screen/menu I should be set.

What do you mean you have to go to work tomorrow. This is work.

You'll get some idea of the wma quality at 22k here (http://www.bad-hair-day.com/music.htm)

This is not quite my idea of 'streaming media'. I have to download the file first and then click on the file in the folder where I saved it... What I am looking for is clicking on a link on my website where a player automatically opens and starts playing. Yours play fine, and they are nice small files, but I want to skip those steps. How do I do that?

but my few tunes I've used in these examples are 661k, 971k, and 1.2mb recorded at 32kps. Not exactly small. If you want a simple MediaPlayer download you can use:
<a href="yourturn.wma">
Some text or Img tag</a>
If you want to check out my tunes quality mouse over the note in the left corner of my home page. They stream for MediaPlayer and NetScape. If you need more help please ask.

P.S. Previously, NetScape did not comply with the Autostart "true" setting. If you did not click play it appeared to download but you will not find any .wma files on your compute. Before or after the streaming (that little piranha has been fed). NetScape now AutoStarts. I checked BHD site and his tunes do stream but they also download. So you must be talking to BHD and he's a good guy to get help from.

blurchy, I'm still working on the menu display of my MediaPlayer Juke Box. I think the problem lies in the difference between MediaPlayer 7 and MediaPlayer 6.4. My streaming "classid CLSID" has been using 6.4 specifications but the display menu is not a function of 6.4 but 7. However, NetScape is not 7 plug-in compatible unless it is the installed media player for the browser (that is, M/S does not have a 7 plug-in for N/S). So I'm now moving to MediaPlay 7 "classid CLSID" and derogating to 6.4 for NetScape. More rocks to turn over: many 6.4 & 7 "param name" functions are not synonymous/compatible but for now my juke box functions by skip forward, ya skip forward. Who wants to skip forward when they can't see where their skipping to.

P.S. Big problem, just discovered MediaPlayer 7 leaks the .wma to Windows\TemporaryInterNetFiles, oh my! Trash the migration to MediaPlayer 7.

in my streaming progress. I've provided the following as a related summary of my streaming babble. Streaming can be convoluted and I have not done anything to provide otherwise. Much of the internet information proclaims streaming is simple. Yes, if you can directly link .asx or .wax files it is simple but I have not been able to do so on PowWeb shared servers (some servers are dedicated to streaming and perhaps PowWeb provides some but I know not where they are). My browsers, IE6 and NetScapes 6.2 & 7 both render .asx and .wax at the local level/PC, so it's not a browser issue. Having said that the following example uses 3 parts. A link to Waterloo.html that conditions the MediaPlayer then enables Waterloo.asx to play Waterloo.wma. I first link an html document in a top left pop up window that begins/enables the streaming:

LINK
<a class=sitemenu onclick=window.open('Streaming/Waterloo.html','','width=325,height=400,scrollbars =no,resizable=yes,location=no,menubar=no,toolbar=n o,top=0,left=0') href="javascript:void(0)">Waterloo - ABBA 661k</a>

The html document contains the conditioning of the MediaPlay (classid="CLSID: and CODEBASE values are 6.4 specific). The <Embed provides a MediaPlay 6.4 plug-in to none enabled browsers (NetScape and others) and points to the .asx file to be executed.

So you need 3 parts. One, the selection link of an html shell, the html shell conditions the MediaPlayer, and initiates the last part, the .asx file finally plays the .wma file.

streaming isnt simple but i dont have a problem linking
to .wax files at all or any other streaming files

i did make a mistake in a windows tutorial i made :(

i encoded a wmv file as audio and thought it was .wma

so anyone using that tutorial would have been confused

ive just fixed it tonight :)

the trigger file is a text file
saved with a .wax file extension

it contains this

i know it works
----------------------------------
<ASX version = "3.0">
<Entry>
<Ref href = "http:www.yourdomainname.com/music.wma" />
</Entry>
</ASX>
----------------------------------

this would link to a .wma file
and most importantly

DONT BLOCK ANY OF THESE FILES IN HT ACCESS
.wax .wma

i made this mistake and spent days
failing at streaming
.htaccess is an odd thing isnt it

the above .wax file should work and
can be triggered off the hard drive
cos it connects thru http

just try it with one file instead of a playlist

Your http link is 404 on arrival. If .wax works for you fine but I believe http does not render native .wax or .asx. They have to be on a streaming server and http is not the protocol for a streaming server. Thanks anyway.

Hi I thought i would get back to you all after trying different things, to tell you the results I got .. and what i have learned as i experimented with different things...

Heres what I found i could do.. I have a cd burner.. so i used my program that comes with my cd burner, to change what was on the cd into a wav.file.. after that i saved it to my music documents... from there I installed what is called a.. real encoder.. this is a free download... I found it upon doing a search from a search engine..... after that i used the real decoder, to change the wav file into a ra file... it shows rm when the encoder is done, so i back spaced and took the m away and put the a in its place...

Ok after that I saved it and gave the music a title..etc... back in my music document, i clicked on file, and chose text file.. i changed the mane of the text file also.. to the same that my ra. was named.. such as the text file.. being called LYL.. I then added a .ram at the end of LYL.. you also have to use abbreviations for the names of songs. such as you are Lord... YAL... the ra. also is Named LYL.ra ok within the text document you would write this..http://www.whatever.org/LYL.ra.. not ram..the text itself is called .ram that your writting the ra in.

So the ra. that you made from a wav file is now changed into ra.. less mb's.. and easier to download and play afterwards

when this is completed, you go into your program and upload both the ra. and the ram into your front page are where ever you want to save it... in the same area.. put in your index file.. this

<a href="http://www.whatever.org/LYL.ram"></a>
you have to create a new text document with each song you make and change to a ra, from a wav. and do it the same way as above... this does seem to work great, and only takes a few seconds to upload, and play on site... it worked for me:)

This is how I handle .wax and .asx:

"HTTP tunneling" - A streaming server sends its packets inside a HTML protocol in order to "bypass" a firewall that does not allow the specified port by that streaming server. To the firewall it looks like regular HTTP traffic... I put my .wax and .asx in HTML because my firewall, not PowWeb, prevents it rendering as native .wax and .asx when downloaded (remember I said it rendered just fine locally). I just stumbled on using HTML but eventually found instances/examples of how to expand, or limit, the MediaPlayer options and enable NetScape's use. I did not know why. I just knew it worked.

Most streaming servers (RealServer, QuickTime, MS Media Services) can stream over HTTP in case UDP or TCP streaming fails (typically the problems are that the streaming protocols are using a port that is not permitted by the users firewall). But I'm using PowWeb to stream and so I use HTML to hide from firewalls. My own firewall in particular.

CASE CLOSED for me!

I found the above at:

ive been streaming .rm files for a while

i much prefer real media to windows
i mean there only one file type to stream anything
(the .ram file im talking about.)

if you have the new real player

i have some code that will open a small webpage
inside your real player when it streams
to display a picture or like i said an actual webpage

i know windows has this function
but its a harder one to understand
and the trigger file is more complicated too

The link you provided is not native .wax or native .asx. It's html that renders .wax or .asx depending on which ever you want. This is the same thing, similar to what I do, or what a streaming server does if it's UDP or TCP is blocked by a firewall. You are as slick as Terrell is smooth.

P.S.This is, as you well know, what native .wax or .asx looks like:

it uses http i dont fully understand it all

all i know is the majority of

windows streaming didnt actually work
for me at all

i eventually went to windows media site itself
to get the code to put in the .wax file

i made it as simple as possible
with the bare essentials to stream
with no author tags etc it may sound daft
im no expert at this but maybe its all these
weird additional tags that are causing the problem
it wouldnt hurt to try using a simpler code

strictly for the purpose of
making it appear as a clickable link

that goes directly to the .wax file

im going to post the code contained
in this . wax that gets past your firewall

You used http

like i said most of the info
about this code is incorrectly
done on absolutely every single
webpage i went on when i was looking
for some code to stream with

every .wax .wvx file
i made from these tutorials
didnt work and theyd show up like
the one u showed me before
as just text
with the code in

its pretty sad that none except
windows actual site had the code
that worked for me

yes i always use the full http address
it doesnt seem to recognise where it is
otherwise

i even use the full http when i stream
an embedded .wma

if i use the full http address link for the .wax file
i can then upload that page
anywhere on my site and it will
still work
cos the address in the media player is pointing
to http://www.mysite.com/my.wax
that address will never change
no matter where i put the page

using this method
the .wax file can also be
triggered from
your hard drive or a floppy disc

and it will stream your.wma to ya
from your own website

it looks just like the other one i showed you

p.m. me your mail address and ill mail it to you

im sure the problem must be the actual .wax file

rather than the code inside it cos im sure

youve tried that by now

i want to send you a .zip file with the page u see there

and the trigger3.wax file if u upload them both to the same location on yer site im sure it will work
you could keep a copy of the .wax file for backup
and reference
then make copies with different names
and change them to point to other music tracks
then add your fancy tags <author>etc
and constantly test them at each step
to make sure they work ok

alternatively right click on the abbabanana link

and goto save target as and that should do it for the .wax file

Way to go you two.

This thread now has just 4 more words in it than Tolstoy's "War and Peace" - And you 'still' haven't sorted it out yet!

Meanwhile, back at the Ponderosa................

I think the legs of this subject are exhausted. The last try was an integration we tried previously. I now know what the inside and outside of a revolving door looks like but it has been educational. With or without native .wax my streams are screaming which is something I did not previously have. Next subject will be "how does blurchy use .htaccess to prevent leaching".

Glad to see your hair.

There's a perl script here which incorporates an anti-leeching device that works reasonably well.

http://www.vaip.werro.ee/elvar/playlist/

But..........

Check the source code and the URL of the files is available.

:rolleyes:

At the end of the day, any full duplex sound card will record whatever is being played. So is there really any point in anti-leeching, unless you just want to stop anyone linking directly to your files, and stealing your bandwidth?

Glad to see your hair.

I thought I was being so smart because my streaming does not download to WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files but to those who will play each tune to full duplex record I say do it. I'm mostly concerned with the bandwidth. Each of my tunes is large and the less the bandwidth leaching the better. If blurchy has had problems protecting with .htaccess then I'll first try your URL. Thanks.

And what do you mean someone missed you. How could you not be missed.

My pleasure........What a small world, isn't it?

Now that you're here, maybe you can take muijefr on to chapter four and solve his leeching problems - Once and for all!

Well, how I stop leeching (with ShotGun) is by checking for valid referrers. The only time (that I know of) that the referrer object is sent to the web server is when someone left clicks on a link for downloading. Right clicks and Save As... doesn't send it.

When using my script, visitors must left click otherwise they get an error. Of course this only works when downloading through ShotGun. If someone was to paste the actual URL to the file in their browser window or hotlink the actual URL from another website, my script won't stop them.

That all make sense? :)

Yes, but that doesn't mean that this is the end of the thread by a long way.

Check this out. It's CROSS-BROWSER compatible. Not as elegant-looking, but it works in Netscape and Opera, too.

This is the generic cross-browser embedding code. This code will instantiate the Media Player ActiveX control for browsers which support ActiveX, and the Media Player plug-in for browsers that don't:

<OBJECT ID="MediaPlayer1" width=160 height=162

standby="Loading Microsoft® Windows® Media Player components..."
type="application/x-oleobject">
<PARAM NAME="FileName" VALUE="http://webserver/path/your-file.asx">
<PARAM NAME="AutoStart" VALUE="false">
<EMBED type="application/x-mplayer2"
pluginspage = "http://www.microsoft.com/Windows/MediaPlayer/"
SRC="http://webserver/path/your-file.asx"
name="MediaPlayer1"

I tested your alternative placing a .wma in the URL param and tested locally. Bingo, bango, bongo my PC blewup and rebooted claiming I had not turn it off properly. What do you think about that. I have Windows98 SR1 and IE6. Am I going to try it again. Nope!
<param name="URL" value="http://www.whatever.com" ref>

P.S.
Additionally, the tone of your post suggest the alternative of html/asx is not cross browser enabling but that's part of the whole point. It enables Netscape 6.2, 7, and Mozilla 1.1. Opera is a mute player in my book.

Just so there is no confusion this is a typical html/asx form and content I use:

I believe, but I'm for sure not sure, your recommending Microsoft Synchronized Accessible Media Interchange (SAMI) technology. It is intended to enable closed captioning to a wide range of multimedia products and the CLSID:6BF52A52-394A-11d3-B153-00C04F79FAA6 is for image specific rendering. I think these might be some key unexplained parameters:

<param name="SAMILang" value>
<param name="SAMIFilename" value>
