View Full Version : Eudora Send Email Problem

I've configured Eudora so I can receive Email with no problem, but have had no success with sending Email. It (Eudora) works correctly with other SMTP servers, but not with PowWebs. I suspect it may be the port number situation (24 vs 25), but I can not find anywhere within the Eudora configuration options where I can change the port.

Help/guidance would be very much appreciated. I really like Eudora and would like to be able to use it for my PowWeb Email activities.

Thank you and cheers.

I'm going to assume that you are using one of the newer versions of Eudora, versions 5 or above.

With Eudora shut off (not running) go into your Eudora directory and find a folder called "extrastuff" - in there you will find a file called "esoteric.epi", copy this file over to your main Eudora directory.

Now start Eudora and go into your Tools > Options and scroll down to the bottom of the setup list. You should now see the option of changing your ports.

Thanks, Jack - that worked! :) I did have to go from v5.0 to 5.2 to get the extrastuff folder, but no problem. It introduced a couple of nice new features.

Another problem has now arisen, however. :( The SMTP port change affects the servers for all personalities, not just the dominant (PowWeb) one. Now I can send mail from PowWeb, but I can't from my other accounts that all use port 25.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm now using two mail clients - Eudora and Outlook.

Thanks again and Cheers.

Why don't you use port 25 for your Powweb account? I have Eudora set up and never needed to change the port from the internet standard.

Please refer back to my initial post. Eudora would not send Email with default SMTP port set to 25. I'm on mail2, which PowWeb Email sever are you on? I'm thinking, it could make a difference. I can send now with it set to 24 whereas I could not send when port 25 was set. There could be a lack of standardization among the (mail) servers. Just a thought. ;)

Cheers.

Roy,

When I was using Eudora, I set up my PW account using the Tools>Options, then set up my other accounts using the personalities. Once they were setup, then I could use the side "Pesonalities" display and right click on a personality and go into it's settings and change them.

I don't remember which version of Eudora I had, but I think it was 5.01.

Rocket Jeff -- What ports you are able to use depends on your own ISP. There are some ISP's that do not block port 25, but not many. My ISP was blocking all relaying until I *****ed loud enough. Now I am able to use Port 24, but that's the only one I can use.

Unfortunately, the personalities proprieties do not provide a change of ports option - although, IMHO, they certainly should.

Thanks again, Jack, for your assistance with this matter.

Cheers.

True, that's a very valid reason to use port 24 (although I'd just switch ISP's if possible).

The other option would be to forget trying to use Powweb's SMTP server and just configure the mail client to use your ISP's SMTP server. Mail can still be received through Powweb's POP3 server, but it would get sent through your ISP's server.

My prior web host didn't offer poet 24 access, so a lot of people with blocked port 25 would just use their ISP's SMTP server.

Roy,

The only thing that effects the use of port 24/25 is your ISP.

When you send an email using the Powweb SMTP system, it first has to pass through your ISP's servers. Normally the port used for SMTP at your ISP is Port 25, so they block this port from the ability to "relay" to stop anyone from using their email systems to bulk relay spam.

So, in answer to your question, "No, it doesn't matter which Powweb server you are using".
