I need a simple, inexpensive shopping cart to help me promote the one item on my site. I may add more items later. Any suggestions?

Yes. Two suggestions. Use PayPal for a free merchant account or use Agora.cgi for offline processing (unless you use a merchant account through someone like Authorize.net)

Just some quick script site search results:

One that is simple, quick, and does not need a merchant account is ibill.com. Of course, they keep 15%, but they do all the hard work of shopping cart scripts and card processing.
Good Luck

iBill and a few others offer free setup and the 'buy button' shopping venue. But that whopping 15% makes it impossible to make any money....especially if you want to also run some type of affiliate program. Depending on your sales volume, it may be better to get a traditional merchant account with like Authorizenet and pay only 2.4% per transaction.

But, just depends on what your product is, your selling prices, and your volume.
