View Full Version : Please Help this Oldfella
Until my chief engineer/master programmer gets home from work, I wonder if some one here can tell me what's happening with my website www.tullatalk.us, the BB/Forums portion: This is what I get: "phpBB Critical Error. Could not connect to the database". Since I don't know much about these things (old and dummy), can some one please tell in plain dummy language what can be done to bring my forum back to life… until my friend gets home from work? Thanks. Oldfella. :(
I checked your site, i can not find it, i get this error

Uhmmm - try this link: http://www.tullatalk.us/
Hello!
The message you are recieving means that the message board could not connect to your mySQL database to pull information from it.
The mySQL database holds information such as each individual post, your member logins, profiles, etc. When it can't connect to the database, the page cannot be displayed.
Now... your next question most likely is "why can't it connect?" :) (I am just going to guess anyway that was your next question hehe.)
There are a couple of reasons.
1. Your forum is using up too much system resources and it's been temporarily disabled by an Admin.
2. Your server's mySQL database is offline.
3. Your forum's configuration has changed and the wrong information for accessing your database is being used.
4. Someone changed your mySQL password in OPS and the forum can't connect to the database because it's using the old password still.
These are just a couple of possibilities. Without actually being able to go into your account and see, I can't say for sure. But that's something at least to get you started. :)
Good luck.
Thank you, Radio Bob - the last I heard about this, from Andrew, was that PowWeb Admins/somebody was working an a new program to trransfer MySQL to the new architecture... maybe this is what is happening - work in process (? ). Maybe Andrew or Starr can shed some light on this. Thanks again. Oldfella:(
Hi there. :)
If you think it's the server itself... try giving PowWeb's support team a call. (Their phone number is listed on http://support.powweb.com)
The support staff would be able to tell you if it's a server issue or if it's a configuration problem with your script.
Good luck!
Thanks, Radio Bob - I couldn't reach any one at the phone number given, but sent email. I appreaciate your help.
Best Regards, Oldfella

Callisto's MySQL seems to work OK for my site (amazing!) so it's not the server, most likely (woew, first tooime I've ever said that about Callisto!)
Doesn't act like it couldn't connect - usually that generates an error message, with most scripts, so I suspect that it's something the staff has done, or there's a problem with the files (no index.htm???)

I just had the same problem with my site at www.realitytv.us so I uploaded a new forum program and it worked fine :)
This issue has popped up in the past with PHPBB2. So, to thwart off any future issues, I switched to Invisionboard which is like waaaaaaaaaay cooler :D

Invision board IS the way to go - fast easy install and I've never had a problem with it (except when callisto crashes)
