I am brand new to using a web host. Can someone tell me if I have an FTP with my powweb account? When I go to my account information, I get the idea that I have an FTP because of the information in there that says that I have 500 mg., etc. Does that only mean that thats the space I have if I have an FTP server?
Thanks, Bob:confused:
The 500meg is all your space. You can access it via FTP using the account information that was sent to you. You can also create new FTP accounts if you want others to be able to upload or download.
You will need a FTP program to upload your pages. Some web page editors have this built in.
Hi Bob!
You have 500 MB of space to store files and such on that can be access over the internet.
You use FTP to upload those files to PowWeb's servers. (So yes, you do have an FTP account if you signed up for a package... in fact, you can create an additional 9 usernames to be able to access your FTP space.)
As far as seeing those files on the World Wide Web, you need to register a domain (as PowWeb only provides you a temporary address to use for 30 days). Once you have your domain pointed at your PowWeb account, you can view your site using that address. Just make sure whatever files you want seen by the world are placed inside of the HTDOCS folder.
You don't need a seperate server, as PowWeb handles it all for you. :) You just need some sort of FTP program to be able to upload the files from your computer to PowWeb's server.
Please let me know if you have any questions or would like recommendations on FTP programs, or whatever. :) We're here to help.

Thanks very much for you reply's!
I have a domain name, and also Adobe GoLive 6, which I just now saw in the manual that it has two built-in FTP clients. So as far as I can understand, I don't need a third party FTP to upload files to Powweb. Is that right?
Thanks, Bob
Hello again Bob.
You can use Adobe GoLive to access the files on your site if you like. :) We'll just need to find out what settings it asks you for, and then we can tell you what to put in there to be able to see the files on your site.
If you are wanting to edit your community forums however, I would suggest using a "REAL" FTP program and not programs like Adobe. They tend to have issues with software-style packages.
Good luck,

Well I downloaded WS_FTP LE, the student thing. Do you think that will be good enough for a small site? If about 30 pages is considered small.
Thanks again, Bob
Sure. :) WS_FTP should be fine. Another program I've used personally too is SmartFTP (http://www.smartFTP.com)
It's just a matter of personal preference. =)
