View Full Version : Just moved in next door!
well hello,
I have just changed my isp to powweb and need some advice, I have my domains parked elsewhere and have gone through the process of changing my DNS settings with them to the appropriate powweb settings. I keep seeing ns3.powweb.com and ns2.powweb.com as the servers to change my domains to. At my parking site the information I get to change is WWW,ummedia.com, mail1 and mail2 I have added the ip addresses from my ops DNS page and also deactivated it. Nothing is working yet as I expected, but have I gone through the right process and how quickly should I get my email back?
responses very much appreciated

Flashdog:
Since this is a modification of DNS entries, this can take 1 - 7 days for DNS propogation. Usually it's only a couple of days but I've seen it take as long as 7.
It's a factor of the way DNS information is shared amongst DNS servers across the internet and not directly related to any particular ISP.
The actual propogation is 72 hours minimun...
because the DNS servers in some countries only update every 24 hours.... as opposed to every 8 hours...
but with a lot of ISP's like roadrunner , ect.... doing url caching, it can take as long as 7 days , for the changes to be seen, on your local servers...
ect....
I have a feeling though you may have changed the wrong settings... normally name servers... don't start with a www extention, or mail....
What was your parking host if I might ask?
All of the changes I've ever made on parked domains, were to change something from DNS.whatever.com , to ns2.powweb.com ect....
You may want to check back with your domain name registrar... and see if there are some other settings to change.....
If all settings are OK, you can add the Powweb DNS, IP address to you local machine.... which will give you access... ect... temporarily....
but their temp address you should have gotten will work as soon as it you get it....
Hope this helps
Thanks for replying, I was worried that I had filled the wrong information in my parking domain, which is freeparking.co.uk by the way. If I would really appreciate if you could check out what I filled in. I've put it up as a gif at the address below

All help very much appreciated

those are your mail.... & C Name records....
where you can point sub-domains.... ie: sales.yourdomain.com
any your MX records... so you can host mail on a different server that lets say mail.powweb.com
I don't think any of those settings will actually point your domain name to powweb.....
there's not a section for DNS , or nameserver informatiom?...
your current DNS information is:
NS1.UKDNSSERVERS.CO.UK 216.167.74.136
NS2.UKDNSSERVERS.CO.UK 216.167.37.222
look for and change these to
ns3.powweb.com
ns2.powweb.com
no need for the IP's, unless your host requires them...
ns3.powweb.com 64.63.125.203
ns2.powweb.com 64.63.125.202
those are the settings you want to change...
if you can't find these settings anywhere... you may have to contact your technical administrator
domadmin@DOMAIN-PARKING.NET
BTW.... neat site
again thank you for your response. I can change the nameserver information but In that section it says
"Manage your own DNS
(Zone File)
This section allows you to add sub-domains, change where the mail is handled from, change which server you use for your web site.
With this DNS Manager you should never need to transfer a domain name again!"
"Domains held within the INWW registrar system are updated in real time by this form.
Updates to domains within the CORE registrar system will take between 12 and 24 hours to appear on the Core WHOIS database.
Please allow between 24 and 48 hours from the point the relevant WHOIS database is updated for the new information to be propogated around the internet.
You do not need to transfer names away from our system if you take advantage of our DNS Manager. Using the DNS Manager you have complete control over web servers, mail servers and sub domains for your domain name."
So you see, I think it is possible to make the changes here without moving my domain name. I'm just not sure if I have put in the correct information. I think if it doesn't in a few days I will change the nameservers to the powweb ones. I'm glad you liked my site, it's quite old now and i'm working on a new one. If you like games I have built a version of roshambo in the same style, you can play against the computer or a friend over the web(still bugbusting this bit) it's at:
http://ummediacom.powweb.com/roshambo
again thanks for your help
Adam
Not that I don't like powweb ....
but I manage 50+ domain names.... with multiple registrars... " some inherited, some I setup "..... each one is a little different.... none of which I've ever had to transfer....
As long as you have to ability to change the DNS information...
you don't have to transfer anything....
I have heard of of some registrars.... " usually just sub-contractors".... of registrars.... that you have to contact them to change your DNS information....
And there are a few.... that offer " Free Domain Names".... but they actually register them in their own name.... so they are not truly yours.... in exchange for the free name.... you agree to run advertising on your site for them.....
well you have the credentials(50+), so i'll change the nameservers. And on your head be it....I cant stand being without email any longer
Adam
one quick question why does nobody use thier names on forums just tags?
flashdog,
Powweb does not support what you are attempting to do. Powweb's hosting accounts are all virtual accounts. You have no dedicated IP address(es) here. Powweb has the right to change the IP address(es) of your accounts at any time.
I am not saying that you *cannot* manage your own DNS for your domain. However, I am offering the advice that you not attempt to manage your own DNS for your Powweb account(s) outside of the features available to you in your own Powweb control panel.
thank you fcsnc
I was just asking the questions. I will turn back on the dns settings at powweb and direct to the nameservers. I am though more and more worried that I cannot point my other domain names at folders within my webspace(i.e http//:www.teamshark.co.uk ---> http://www.ummedia.com/shark). Is this true?
Adam
Powweb does not support subdomains within a Powvalue package. So, your fear is well-founded.
As I thought, I ve seen a thread that talks about using an CNAME and .htaccess file will that work?
this is the thread
http://forum.powweb.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1268
hopefully
Adam
I would advise not looking in that direction unless you also intend to host teamshark.co.uk at powweb.
fcsnc
Are you sure? These domain names use url cloaking to see the html of the said site. Basically a frame within a frame, the inside frame is pointed at your specified html page i.e http://teamshark.ummedia.com. I think I will have to let my domain proporgate and then check this stuff out within my 30days MBG, because even though it's such a good deal I need to be able to do that with my other domains.
Thank you for your time fcsnc
