good user authentification script?

Anyone got any ideas for some good php programs that I can use for user authentification. I'd prefer it to be something I could virtually include on each page (tell the person whether they are logged in or not)

Also I'd prefer to not have to run any database queries as i'm not experienced in that quite yet.

Any specific ideas (url's to script) would be appreciated
