Thanks in advance for resetting the database which I still think we should be able to do ourselves....

Have you written support@powweb.com (or use the form in OPS)? I doubt if the admins are reading the forums too often on Sunday morning...

You want any one of a thousand users to be able to down your database whenever they want? Resetting it does take a little bit of time. I doubt if Powweb want to be able to let customers start their own Denial-of-Service attacks...

MySQL on terra.powweb.com is still down I have stopped counting the hours.

You could be right about the reset access. The least they could do is to make an automatic checker that checks the database every hour or so... I could write a PHP script for them that would do just that!

Ditto very very frustrating!

We’ve just launched our site and now this! #@!#@!
Gotta love 99.7% Uptime. MYSQL probably isn’t counted in that anyway.

Sent note to support...

Update: Now getting

Get use to it. Powweb has really went down hill in the past 6 months.

neptune was down at least 4 times this month. that like 70% uptime. I am getting use to having my site going down every 3 or 4 days now.

Well I don't have a lot of problems with Powweb although some have depending on the server it appears.

I'm back up & running on all fronts... THANKS!

I have 4 domains hosted here at Powweb. After 2 years and 2 months of being here I can’t take it anymore. Call it bad luck/ timing whatever. For now, at least one of my business sites will be leaving the Powweb community a.s.a.p. I really don't want to, but when your customers can't purchase your product it creates two big problems: loss of money and customers.

Powweb is missing one important ingredient from where I stand "Reliability".

30-40 seconds to load a web page around 34kb ? With a Cable modem (@411 kilobytes per second dl) Sunday was pretty much a waste. Now it's Monday good morning. Going on a good 20 plus hours with the same problem.

Any chance on a solution to the terra-MySQL problem this week??

Thanks in advance,

Two speeds almost bearable and not anyone else? It is definitely not like it was in terms of stability and speed. I've got three emails from service saying everything is back to normal.

I feel like I’m trapped in the twilight zone.
back to normal? ahh a new paradigm..

@Starr

I can assure you that something is wrong with the MySQL database on terra!!!! The problem is that it is not so all the time.

Every now and then hundreds of database actions are shown in the Process list that have taken over more than 1000 seconds already. The only thing I can do then is kill those actions and hope that things will improve.

Now everything seems to run normal again, but the question is for how long??

Thanks in advance for your reply,

Jan

Ok now my site was back to normal Http access was fast, pages loading perfect. Then access started getting slow again, like normal the page just hung for like a minute. Something new happened this time I got the powweb 500 error. Now the site access is back to normal super fast instead of the dreaded “MYSQL connection error”. Is the problem a page time out function? That’s not timing out and causing Mysql to crash?

jan
2-17-03, 04:48 PM
The same here. Things were getting out of control again. When I checked the MySQL Process list I could see many processes that were already taking over 90 seconds.

Then all of a sudden the 500 error after which immediately all processes seemed to have stopped. Now everything seems to be working fine!

I am really interested in knowing what Powweb did to solve the problems! And even more in what they will do to prevent these problems in the future!

Greetings,

Jan

@Starr

Thanks!

The problem definately seems to be sold now. Would it be possible for you to let us know what the problem and the solution were?

Thanks in advance,

Problem has returned :-(

If I check the Process list in MySQL (show process list) I see an enormous list of processes that just don't get finished. If I don't stop those processes they will take over 1000 seconds.

The result is that our Forum just cannot be accesses at all....

Something I somehow expected to happen indeed has:

MySQL on terra.powweb.com is down again.... This is the fourth day in a row and again at a prime time European business day....

Update
It's working again! Would it be possible that Powweb finally have built some checker script that is capable of resetting the database?

Problems are back again!!!!!!!!!!!!

We get enourmous Process listings in MySQL. The only thing we can do is stop the processes after 120 seconds. But it is not of much use.........

Because of the MySQL overload terra.powweb.com is also getting very slow with normal non MySQL pages! It probably won't be long before terra.powweb.com collapses again!

MySQL extraordinarily sluggish. More than 2 minutes to load Ikonboard with a tiny db. It did finally load, but responded equally slowly to commands.

I think it's safe to say that it is about time that they move the MySQL database to a more reliable server... Or they make sure that a more permanent fix indeed is a more permanent fix!

It is only a matter of time before terra goes completely down and all sites hosted on terra will go offline!

I have been on terra for 14 months and it has been one of the best performing servers on Powweb. Rarely, if ever were there problems on this particular server. In fact, except for systemwide troubles, I can only recall a very few brief outages. Over the long haul, I bet terra runs at 99.9% or better.

I believe Starr when he told me that this is due to excessive resource useage by some users on this server. What a shame that a few users can bring down everyone to this level of frustration. Their sites must be running just as slowly. I appreciate that I was told the reason behind the slowup, but that is not a solution.

I have no doubt that Powweb wants to give us the best service they can on a shared server. Sometimes it's hard to stay ahead of the abusers. Hopefully they will come up with a system to shut down offending sites automatically.....and do it soon.

Actually that sounds very harsh to me. I'd sure most people wouldn't be server experts and would have little or no idea at how processing intensive their scripts might be.

Labelling everyone as an "abuser" and treating them with draconian measures seems unreasonable to me. I'm sure most people would be happy to modify their sites/scripts once they were alerted of the problem.

Ddr

I agree with you in principle. It would be nice if everyone did the right thing.

Sometime when you are really really bored and feel the need for a few hours of self abuse, go back and read through this particular Forum's posts for a few months and read about how many abusers that actually were shut down for overuse of resources argued and fought and said "dont blame me, it not my fault". We live in an age where taking responsibility for your own actions is considered a flaw and where whatever you can get away with is considered a win.

I, for one, will do my best to keep myself out of a situation where any shared server is my lifeline or a major source of income because you have no control over the other users, their bulletin boards, and who decides to intentionally be malicious. There are some very capable people out there who know exactly how to do it, too.

So, while I agree that Draconian measures sure do seem harsh, it also occurs to me that the ones who have complained the loudest on this Forum are often the worst abusers. I am not saying you are. I am saying that most reasonable people accept throttles as way to better server everyone.

Andrew has posted an announcement in the announcement forum regarding tera's mySQL.

They're continuing to work on the problem.

In the mean time.... if mySQL is critical to your site, you might consider asking to move to the new server architecture.

There will be a couple days of downtime as the DNS reproprogate's to the correct area... but you should have better luck there.

E-mail support if you are interested. Make sure to note your URL, that you know there will be downtime involved, and that you would like the site and the mySQL databases moved as well.

They've been moving folks who have requested to move to the new architecture.

2-22-03, 03:57 PM
ok, I just email support (well my third one) and this time I asked them to move me to it. I dont care if there is a few days downtime as long it will be up every weekend then I am more than happy to move it. if the same problems will occure on the new server then there is really no point to move there.
