(1) Before I joined, I calculated basing on my past 6 months record that my bandwidth should be between 10 to 14 gb per month. (2) I kept a daily record in the first 20 days after I joined (basing on the monitoring system of two major sites from there users download a file from my site. The record showed I should be comfortably within the 12 gb limit. (If slightly over I am prepared to pay) (3) There is no visible monitorying system and until today, I have never received any mail from PowWeb telling me the daily usage is high (4) Today I got this mail: "Our daily report shows that your account for .....is using well over our allotted 12 GB of data transfer per month. Currently, your website has been averaging 1048.20 MB/day which comes out to 31446 MB of data transfer per month. Anything over 12 gigs will be charged $8/gig per month. In order for us to continue hosting your website, we need your Acknowledgement ....Please comply with this request within 24 hours to avoid suspension of your account". (5) I got the said mail of blue -- l0 days after the 30 day money back guarantee.

I am going to reason with PowWeb, if you guys don't see me back, that means I have been thrown out by PowWeb meanwhile.

Hermanliu,

All you have to do is comply with their request to sign the form and fax it to them. This will keep you in good stead with Powweb.

If you can install your own scripts to limit the number of downloads, or consider moving some of your downloads to a different site somehow, I would advise you to do so because of the expense of so much bandwidth. (People accuse Powweb of gouging for over 12GB, but bandwidth is expensive even to them, and they would probably not make any profit off you even if you were to ante up with the extra $8/GB).

From what I understand, if you can get back down below the 12GB you will be fine. Don't be angry with Powweb, they are giving you a chance.

FYI, if you start using over 400 MB per day (comes out to roughly 12 GB per month) you will trigger a script that notifies us of your usage.

We then send out this email so you know what your current daily usage is AND what it comes out to over a 30 day period.

Regardless if you lower your bandwidth to under 400 MB per day, you need to print out, sign and fax back that document to keep your account open w/ Powweb. It does not mean that you will be charged anything unless you go over your allotted 12 GB of transfer per your billing cycle.

I hope this clears this up for you.

What if you dont have a fax machine?

I don't have a fax machine either, but a webmaster will find a cheap scanner and a fax modem handy to have around. ;)

Seriously though, you could ask the borry of a friend or co-worker's machine, or check the local post office, copy center or office-supply store for a 1-time fax service.

Is there a way that I can find out what mine is so that I may head it off at the pass? I have a large web site and I'm just wondering.
