View Full Version : Web URL by IP or domain
Hello,
I would like to receive advices about this:
From days before, I have been working with my
URL : http://www.Mydomain.com, the web pages for
this domain are in my local server. (I need that always this
web pages are in my server local, i dont like move them.)
Then, I bought a package in Powweb, this is called "Mydomain.com", but it is a new repository
for web pages. (I dont like to store my web pages there for the
moment, only I like to use mail services of my package)
So, I create a page there, whose function is redirect
to my local server, in this way for instance:
... redirect http://MyIPAddressLocalServer/index.html
well, Now my navegation over the site is using
http://myIPAddress/
What I need to do in my package powweb, in order to permit
navegation over my site but using http://www.Mydomain.com,
reading the web pages stored in my server local ???
Any help is greatly appreciated.
I don't think you can do this via PowWeb, but it's easy enough to do on your own. You need to find a file on your computer called "hosts". Search your system for it - on my Windows XP system, it's in Windows\System32\drivers\etc
Edit hosts in a text editor and add the line:
127.0.0.1 www.mydomain.com
to the end. Obviously, you substitute your actual domain for "mydomain.com", which I'm sure you don't own! Save the file. You may need to reboot.
Now if in your web browser you open www.mydomain.com, it will look on your local system. This does not interfere with your e-mail use.
hello, thanks for you answer.
But i have a doubt about this:
You are sure that if in my host file i put:
MyIPAddress www.MyDomain
only it is necessary to permit math mydomain with that IP ???
if it is correct, so, when i try to access from other pc in order
physical place from the browser
http://www.mydomain (read in powweb)
Redirect http://MyIPAddress (send from powweb)
and automatically appear
http://www.mydomain.com ??? in my browser ???
this is correct ???
I'm sorry if I'm having trouble following your problem description.
My suggestion of editing the hosts file assumed that your access would always be from that one computer. If you're using other computers on your local network, you need to edit their hosts file too and give the actual IP address of your system that has the local web server rather than 127.0.0.1.
The idea is to make each of your local computers think that www.mydomain.com translates to the IP address of your local web server, and not to go off to the Internet to look for it.
As I said, you cannot do this with a redirect in the way you want.
Would it not be simpler to just upload your web site to PowWeb and use it normally? :D
ok, but the problem is that:
First:
I have a lot pages in my local web server to www.Mydomain.com
which it is ASPs (Active Server Pages), and powweb dont
use ASPs.
Second:
In each ASPs code I am using conecction to SQL Server 7 databases using ODBC, so, I need to create a Data Source ODBC.
And powweb only support connection to Lunix or unix, and not
work with windows.
for this reason, i can not move my files there.
do you understand me ???

i am so sorry, but, what sent me ?
As far as I can understand what you want, do this:
1) get a dynamic DNS URL that redirects to your computer's IP address.
http://www.dyndns.org/services/dyndns/
2) Redirect your real domain name to the dynamic DNS domain name you obtained in #1.
When the user types in your real domain name, it goes to your dynamic DNS URL, which redirects to your computer.
Good luck.
ok, that sound a good idea.
But, could exist problem with my Mail Services ???
because I have mail & web services with powweb, i bought a
package in powweb mainly for use mail services.
If i get a dynamic DNS URL which redirects to me computer's IP address, would exist problems ???
for example, that my mails will arrive delay ???
continuos unpingable ???

Sent second PM on this.
Let me know if it works.
You will not lose any of your email services by (A) pointing to your local server.

Rick...
First: I have a package with powweb called:
Mydomain.com (Here i dont have the asp file, only redirect to
http://Myipaddress/index.html)
so, I access it in this way: http://www.Mydomain.com
Second:
I have a local web server, and I access in this way, because
I bought a pachage in powweb: (Here I have the asp files)
http://Myipaddress/index.html
If I use a dymanic DND, so, I could access my domain in this way
Mydomain.com.dyndns.org or
Mydomain.com.homeunix.com, etc ???
if it is ok, so, i am changing the domain, because
before I could access applying http://www.Mydomain.com
but, now I would need to access applying http://www.Mydomain.com.dyndns.org.
thats a problem, i dont like to change the name for my domain.
I dont know, but
I would like something easy such as:
write http://www.Mydomain.com and that powweb redirect
automatically to my local web server, but never change the URL
initial.
do you understand me now ???
only i need to give to powweb the IP of my local server, not more.
but how ??? it is possible ??? where ???
My suggestion was to get a dynamic DNS URL through http://www.dyndns.org/services/dyndns/. They give you a URL such as myaddress.dnsalias.com.
myaddress.dnsalias.com always goes to your computer, even if you have a dynamic IP address on your computer. If your computer has a fixed IP address you do not need this.
Now you redirect your regular domain name to myaddress.dnsalias.com, which gets redirected to your computer.
mydomain.com -> myaddress.dnsalias.com ->myipaddress/index.html
I'm sorry if I do not understand your question.
Now my question to you is, why don't you just get a web hosting account with a host that uses Windows boxes so you have ASP and the other features you require?
about this:
Now my question to you is, why don't you just get a web hosting account with a host that uses Windows boxes so you have ASP and the other features you require?
this is my answer:
well, frist I dont need get a web hosting account
because i have own my machine web server which it is ok.
The main idea here is that i dont have mail hosting, so,
I bought a package in powweb mainly for this reason (mail services) and it is very cheap and good!
But, only i would like that admins in powweb can help
me in how redirect the IP domain from powweb to my local web server, it is all.
dou you understand me now ?
And I dont know sites from ASP web hosting cheap.
You can use the DNS panel to specify that the A records for your domain point to your server, if you have a static IP address, and keep the PowWeb MX settings for e-mail. I'm not an expert in this, and it isn't an issue for the admins, since there's nothing wrong with PowWeb here. I suggest posting in the DNS section of this forum if you need more help.
It does seem like a tremendous waste of money, though, if you're paying $96/year just for POP3 service. I pay $30 to SpamCop and get spam/virus filtering.
Let me suggest that you drop the hosting account, go to your registrar and forward your e-mail to the POP3 server of your choice while specifying that your local PC's static IP handles web connects.
