My site was up half an hour ago, now it appears to be down.
This is only my second day here, i hope this doesn't happen too often.

It worked fine for me :)

Sometimes these are ISP issues, not hosting issues. In between you and the host server could be anywhere from 10 - 20 'hops'. Any of those can have a glitch and make it appear the your site isn't working.

That's right SimCo, but you know... it's always the webhost's fault... RIGHT???

*COUGH*

Still down for over 6 hours now.

I can view my site using the temporary address but not with my domain name Mudmovers (http://mudmovers.com)

I ran tracert on www.mudmovers.com and it made it to PowWeb in 21 hops.

People in the US can view my site, not sure about anyone in the UK/Europe

Just an FYI on this, true story about ISP's and DNS that can be and could be the culprit in many of these issues of 'site is down'.

We created a website at www.physicianlender.com which had a previous website of some pea soup looking green color that was atrocious. We transferred the domain name to Powweb, put up the new site without a hitch. The problems started when all of a sudden we'd be pulling up the old pea soup site instead of the new site when typing the full URL into the address bar of our browser. Sometimes the new site would show in the mornings then disappear to the pea soup site in the afternoon. We couldn't figure it out.

Finally, we discovered (with much help from Starr) that there was a server out there in between that had failed to update their DNS name server setttings. Therefore, it would bounce back and forth between the two sites. He did make the change and eventually it went away.

Folks, this lasted 6 weeks. So, strange things can happen and it's not always the hosts fault ;)

As I said in an earlier post I have run tracert which shows the last hop as PowWeb, wouldn't that indicate the problem is there?

Oddly if I remove the www. it comes up fine

The mudmovers.com domain is less than 72 hours old. You can run into problems with any new domain until it propagates fully. Give it another 12 - 24 hours and you shouldn't see any more intermittent problems.

Not necessarily. That just means that it's been propagated and that it's finding the server. What I was describing above is an incident where some ISP's do not update their name servers but perhaps once per week. So if they're pointing a domain name to the wrong spot then you'll get a 404 error. It's happened to me on more than one occassion. The difficulty is finding the culprit.

Powweb updates their name servers daily to correspond with the latest changes of the domain name registrars. Some do it every 3 days, some every week, some (as I found out ) only when you bark at 'em :)

When I started in this thrill-a-minute web hosting biz way back when, earthlink would clear their name server cache every thirty days. We spent a lot of time explaining to earthlink customers that they wouldn't be able to see their new site for a few weeks. That always went over big.

Ok, thanks alot guys. Now I can view my site I'm a bit happier.
Apart from this I am happy with PowWeb, alot faster uploading/downloading than 50megs :)

MJP...that's a great example. Since there's no 'standard' for updating they all seem to have their own agenda without consideration for the web site owners. I mean, c'mon.... there's literally 1000's of domains registered monthly. You'd think they'd understand the importance of having the name server info updated at least daily.

Thanks for posting that! :)
