View Full Version : FTP randonly timing out - probably not a Powweb prob, but I need help!

I have a real niggling problem: I have an ADSL connection with ICS (Internet Connection Sharing), and when I try to ftp a site, sometimes it will work, but quite often it will get to the login prompt and then hang, or I can login and it will then hang on a LS or a PWD or a CD - it's totally random.
After a while, a "timeout while waiting for response from server" message will come up. The only way round it is to close the connection and start again. This is for sites both on ftp01 and magnatar.

The ICS is running on a Win98SE machine, the clients are Win2K.
The ICS machine runs Norton Firewall, but the problem remains even if I temporarily disable the firewall.

It doesn't matter which of the 4 ftp clients I try, the symptoms are always the same.

Having to log in to Powweb's FTP 5 or 6 times each time I want to update a file is driving me nuts!

We've spoken to the ADSL provider and the ISP, they say it's not a problem at their end. I've googled for an answer and found nothing relevant.

HELP! (Please :)

Have you checked to see if FTP works correctly on the PC hosting the ICS. And each of the clients?
I had a problem like this running Wingate where FTP would time out for the clients only. It turned out that if the clients were not logged into WinGate correctly FTP failed. It was awhile back but I had to make sure each PC was configured properly and able to talk smoothly with the PC hosting the ICS.
If the ICS Host is able to FTP correctly with no time outs. Then you know for sure it's your local network.
