View Full Version : Been asked before, but...

I know it has been asked before, but researching earlier threads did not exactly answer my question. I beg the indulgence of the Pow-ers that be. I am looking for a recommendation for a very particular kind of BB or a news management app. If it is Perl/CGI based, that is easy, but PHP based is also ok.

I am creating a client's website. The client is a kitchen designer, wanting this website to add to his credibility and act as a sales aid. One thing I would like to give him is a Q & A page where people can ask this expert to address specific kitchen related questions.

The key features I need in this BB are:

-Extremely simple, low tech looking user interface, but with more appeal than a Guestbook. Editable html templates is a plus.

-Moderator features, particularly the ability to edit or delete user entries before they are posted on the site. (In that industry, customer satisfaction never runs 100% and I am obliged to create a way to prevent "flaming").

-Ability to allow unregistered users.

-Auto e-mail response to posters would be a plus, too.

I am not too lazy to do the research myself. I have many possible choices at the usual resource pages. I either have to install and evaluate a whole bunch of them or ask for a little help here. (or both)

I am using IB3 on another site and am familiar with YaBB. They would be WAY too intimidating to his clientelle, who are typically not the computer literati that we see here in these Forums. They would take one peek at the interface and *click* to another page.

Anyone have specific apps to suggest? Free apps are great, but I would seriously consider others.

Thank you in advance.

If you're looking for an FAQ page then try these:

Dale,

Despite the ::ahem:: reputation that Matt Wright's scripts have attained on this board, I have found that most web users love his WWWBoard script. In fact, I have been trying to ween my visitors off of it in favor of "fancier" boards with extremely limited success. It's free:
http://fcsnc.com/discuss/faq.html

Since everything is html-based, you can run it in a frame or add decoration to the script to give it your own "look and feel."

It comes with a WWWAdmin script that allows you to delete posts.

You will find links on the MSA site to shareware adaptations of Matt's scripts, including WWWBoard. They add things like e-mail autoresponse and notification, pre-filtering of posts, and so forth. Most of these adaptations could be done very simply by anyone familiar with Perl and HTML, and most "posters" hate them.

Thanks Sim, I will definitely look them over.

Thanks Tom, I haven't had enough time in programming to develop any serious prejudices against Matt, so I will go look at what you suggested, too.

If either of these fill the bill, I will report back. I am sure that someone else has needed to use a simple looking, yet configurable interactive interface before.

I used Matt's board for a couple of years, and liked it. But when I wanted something a bit more flexible in terms of dusplay options, better admin script, stc., I changed to WEBBS. You can find my board at
http://asiarecipe.com/cgi/web/webbbs_config.cgi

It has all the features Dale wants, and then some. Very easy to configure and excellent support via their forum

http://awsd.com/scripts/webbbs/

The basic script is free, but the excellent Admin script is $50

It's only the second script I've ever paid for, and I can't recommend it more highly

Thanks Larry

I am checking out your suggestion. I would have spent more time doing that, but I really got into surfing your site and time just slipped away *s*. Great site. Thanks for your help.
