Help! I have a bunch of Tar files available for download, but no one can open them in winzip. Why? anyone?

Opinions on having just the Zip files instead of Tars? Or should I have both?

I have an old free version of WinZip at home and it won't untar tar files. At work we have Winzip 8.0 pay version and no problem. I guess what I'm trying to say is if you offer tar only many will not be able to use them.

We use the free version of Winzip 8.0 at work. I can not open the files at all. I have opened .tar files in the past with no problem, but I am getting a error when I try yours.

Hi Alpha!

I'm thinking of offering up Zips. 95% of my users are IE anyway. And If they are using win then they can d/l any number of unzip programs to use. & I know Mac people can unzip things to.

Thing is I have WinZip 8.1 at home an no problems. I have Winzip 8.1 at work and I get the error. Both are trials. huh? That's what has me confused.

Arrrrgh! I hate being confused!

btw- what's the advantage of Tar files anyway? Other than dev peeps working on *nix systems.

Maybe you should put a link alongside them to:

http://www.powerarchiver.com/

;)

My PowerArchiver 2000 Freeware version handled them without a problem.

Strange. Winrar also has no problem with the file. And when Winrar was installed Winzip also was able to open it up. I did notice it was double tared, you may want to try tar and then zip after.

double tared?

I will try to tar then zip and see if it'll make any difference. I hope so. it really is a pain to do all the files manually through winzip.

Never mind. It was Winzip acting strange. Using Winrar it works great.

A little off topic, but I installed it on my site. It is very well done :).

http://gallery.necrotania.com if you want to take a look. It has nothing to do with the rest of the site, right now it is for my RC truck, but it beats paying fototime to do the same thing :)

The file I downloaded was called G1-3-3Conv-v1.tar.tar not G1-3-3Conv-v1.tar.gz.

It worked fine in Winzip 8 after I renamed it.
I think offering both is a good idea.
I would also suggest having a direct FTP available as well.
I hate having to download stuff just to upload it to the server again.
Direct FTP'ing takes no time at all.
Its just a matter of having the files in 1 directory and a seperate FTP user for this dir.

Thanks Halfabee! I'll look into this more later tonight, if I get time. ;)

Hey Calash, very interesting color combo on your Gallery! Grey/Orange/Green/ & Purple? :D

Did you find tweaking it to be ok or confusing? I haven't had any feedback on it yet.

Well.. the purple is what was in the css file as a default so that is not my fault :)

It was easy once I figured out the file I needed to edit. I had been editing the standalone file, so I was missing the embedded file with all the cool tags. Once I started reading that file it was very easy to setup. I did have to look at the source a couple of times to see what tags were causing what effect, but overall it was very easy and quick to learn.

*sniff Sniff* Whats wrong with my color scheme? :) I kind of like it. Ok, I will think of getting rid of the purple :)

I just founf a small issue that I overlooked until I checked my error logs. The path that is set in the embedded.css for images is really strange. On my site it is /gallery/images. The path that was in the CSS was /galleryskins/samples/recoded/images/. Once I edited this I was able to see all sorts of images that I did not know about :)

I have some editing to do now to make it look good again :)

I redid the Instructions on my site to have the person edit the images path. ;) Not everyone has the same /gallery/images/ if it's installed with different folder paths. So I just left it deffault to mine so it's easy on me when changing, improving, and multiplying.

Will tweak it up again to have a bit more explicit instructions on what all the CSS tags do.
