Whatever the price and the company do not believe what you see. I would not change powweb with anything....well only if I find a FREE hosting company maybe :)

Don't be impressed by a low price. The most important thing is reliability, customer service and user help support.

Trinity,

You might want to check the forum at Webhostingtalk (http://www.webhostingtalk.com) and do a search there. Anything below 7.77 a month I would do some deep research for.

In most cases it wouldn't be worth it as that host could be here today and gone tommorow, I had a friend lose his site from a host going away overnight. One of the dead giveaways if they offer "unlimited everything" when there is no such thing. Their TOS would say something different. Compared to Powweb, it has been around for some time and will be here for sometime, at least to the next Supernova! I think the Flinstones had a site here in the early days! :D

Our homeowner's association was using a host that costs less then $1 month, but it had more downtime then the oldest bus in our fleet, and that thing breaks down all the time! I don't even want to talk about their mysql, which is $2 month(Here it's $10 one time only), but lost the database after 4 days. I have since moved the HOA board back to my site. I'm sure many others will chime in the hazards of super el-cheapo hosts.

I have to agree with KimmiKat. A friend and I had a small site that we were initially running with one host (which shall go unnamed). That host's equipment broke, and our site was down for several weeks, as they did not have the necessary replacements to get us back online. We moved to an "unlimited" host, which was fine for a couple of weeks--until they doublecharged me for our year's worth of space, and soon after their site (and ours!) went offline. We received an e-mail about a month later stating that the company was suspending operations. (Really, who would have guessed.)

Certainly, I've encountered one or two "downtimes" with PowWeb, but they have been infrequent, and nothing close to the magnitude of my former hosts. If you did decide to go with another company, you might want to "test" them for a few months before moving all your important stuff over there. (I speak from experience....)

As suggested earlier, check out ANY business you are considering handing your money to online with the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

Find out how long they have been in business, how many customers they have, what levels of support they have, etc.

Also see if they have at least a 30 day money back guarentee. If they can't offer that, then they are most likely not confident in their own services. And if they are not confident in their service... lol....

I doubt you'll ever find another host that provides as much as PowWeb does at a lower cost. Especially one with such a strong reputation.

They offers all that powweb does but only 10 day guarentee.

Trinity,

Only 10 days, it takes 24 to 72 hours for a domain to propogate, so that leaves you with 7 to 9 days actually. Another thing while shopping if check if they have a member support mboard. You can judge on the number of complaints about servers, mail, etc being down. Although there's posts on this mboard about server problems, I've seen hosts that had 100 times the number of complaints about dead servers and other things. One I seen would close the thread without answering it.

Several thoughts:

Would you fly transatlantic on the the airline that pays the least to their mechanics, pilots, ground crew and paid the lowest for the planes that they fly, the ones that are 40 years old?

Would you go to a heart surgeon that ended up lowest in a class of 200?

Would you go to an oral surgeon who also graduated last in his/her class?

Would you want to be protected by a body guard who was hired because he was the lowest bidder? Same true for private detective. lawyer, etc.?

Lowest cost doesn't always mean better ... The key is least cost long term and one that is most effective to meet all of your valid expectations!

In summary, you get what you pay for!

Sandy,

You are so right. A neigbouring transit agency paid $15 for a high-school student to put a page up since they had no clue what to do, and the site looks like a $15 dollar site.

I mentioned elsewhere that our HOA (homeowners association) pays less then a $1 month and that site has more down time then our oldest bus. Although it has mySQL, we can't host their mboard there (It's on my site instead) since their server lost the site twice and the database got toasted when they attemped to upgrade the mySQL to 4.0.12 but failed. They put the old version back.

We could go to one of those webhosting mboards and really have a discussion about el-cheapo hosting.

Since the beginning of the year, I have had 100% uptime with PowWeb. All promises made by them have come true, they are continuously giving us more value for the money.

The speed is excellent and I have had no reason to call support this year at all. Whatever they are doing with the upgrades sure is working.

I am a customer for life, I will not change, in fact I am referring about 10-12 customers per week to PowWeb. Some of the people are customers and friends of mine and I would never refer them if I did not believe that PowWeb was the best.

... find a FREE hosting company ...

Well that moment has not yet arrived! Maybe in a decade powweb will be free of charge :)

The point is that powweb is very cheap for what they offer in the package. Yes most of us do not use all the package resources but still it is more comftable. As an example you can look at cars or mobile phones ...you do not use all the functions and buttons ... but if you decide to start using something else then it's nice to have it there waiting for you.

Powweb is nearly a complete perfect solution. A perfect one would be free. However being free would mean a lot of rubbish so the system will colapse.

Anyway... Starr you might want to reflect on this thought :D

Oh I love Powweb!!!

Well, there are "free" hosting offers, such as Geocities and 50megs.com, but, as Heinlein famously wrote, There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch. These "free" services limit what you can do, force pop-up and banner ads on your users, and generally make life difficult for serious users.
