View Full Version : Log Rotation
I just noticed that the logs didn't rotate this morning. Something to do with daylight saving time, perhaps? What's going on this time?
Ted,
I noticed that my logs hadn't rolled over either. Not a big problem. My cron job workee fine and my webstats updated as expected. I just happen to have a very large access_log, 20 MB+.

Still no log rotation. You don't suppose they forgot. Maybe there's no one there - after all, it is Sunday. ;)
There are folks at PowWeb 7 days a week. :)
They have tech support every day of the week now... and even when they're not answering the phones, it does not mean they're not answering e-mail. :) :)
Just drop a note to support. They'll get to it.
It's not a major priority, as logs don't count against your web space.
Good luck!
Thank you RadioRob. :) That is very reassuring. :) :)

If you have a dial-up connection, a large log file can indeed be a major priority regardless of web space.
They rotated my site's logs at 1458 PDT today. Better late than never, I guess.
The logs rotate at 2am every Sunday morning, and since there was no 2am last Sunday, nothing happened.
They did all the log work manually, and everything should be up to date now.

Noyt a big dea, really. But if a computer can recognize that it's now Daylight Savings Time, on would think that the computerm and associated programs, would know to run the log rotation as well, 2AM or not. In fact, there was a 2AM, and only at that precise moment, does the time move forward. It would seem to me that the log rotation should still have occured. So what did your system think... It's now 1:59.59 and all of a sudden.. whoosh .. it's 3AM!
Just curious :)

Is there any special reason to do it at 0200 rather than at midnight or some other time? Doing it at a different time would avoid daylight saving time problems (will logs get rotated twice on 5 October, when there will be two 2am's?).
the logs are rotated at 2am because that's the time in which it is conducive to do it. I guess we can do it at peak times and try to peg out the machine but I have a feeling we'd have a worse thread then, don't you?
I got mail from Powweb support telling me that all the logs should be rolled over by the end of today (April 8). It is now 11:45 PM, and mine are still not rolled over. What's going on? Are they doing it manually? (BTW, my domain name is swazoo.com)
As for the question of when the logs are rotated, I don't think anyone is suggesting that they be rotated in the middle of the day. Doing it at 3 AM would avoid peak hours, and would also avoid the problem of the shift to daylight savings time. Doing it at 2 AM on any day of the week but Sunday would also avoid the daylight savings time problem.
I understand that the folks at Powweb are thinking about changing way web logs work. Does anyone know what is being considered?
