View Full Version : Interesting Phenomena

On Monday I changed my crontab file to run every hour, instead of every 6 hours, since I was approaching the 2 GB/day limit. I wanted to check and see where I was and if I got too close to the 2 GB, I was going to close access to 2 of my newer picture pages, until after midnight. I also had this issue to contend with on Tuesday. I am now back to my normal 600 MB/day average traffic pattern.

What's the interesting phenomena? I've changed my crontab file back to run every 6 hours, yet the webstats is still being updated every hour, right to the minute, as it has for the past 3 days. No matter what I do to the file, it is still running every hour.

Has the system changed whereby my crontab file changes won't be recognized until after midnight tonight? In the past, changes made were recognized immediately. I have also checked my file using different ftp programs, and, the new changes I made are definitely there.

I'm not losing anything because of this question, since the webstats is being updated every hour. However, I don't need them updated as often, and the update every six hours is adequate at this time.

Anyone able to shed some light on this?

Thanks.

You may have an error in your crontab and cron rejects the error and uses the one it has cached.

Hi Halfabee.

Don't think that is the problem. I only changed the time and hour the crontab ran. In any event, I deleted it and re-created the file, and will see what happens in about 45 minutes!

Interesting again .. I just checked my Webstats and the last update was at 0022 PDT, and none of the hourly updates since. So, it appears that the hourly update stopped when midnight passed, and, my crontab did what it was sujpposed to do, that is, run every 6 hours.

from bad to worse ..

Now my crontab file isn't updating anything. I "supposedly" have the job set to run every hour now, to see if it starts. The (last automatic upate) ran at 0022. I ran it manually at 1322. Nothjing since. Somewhere I read there was a 3 hr wait needed for the cron to start running again?

In the future .. if this starts to work, I'll just let it run, and run, every hour if ned be, and leave it alone! :)

Sandy,

You mentioned running WebStats manually. How do you do it? I am again attempting to run the updates from cron, but can not get it working. I know the crontab file is being read as all other cron operations (including updating AWStats) are working fine.

Thank you. Cheers, Roy

Sandy,

Please disregard my manual update question. I've cracked that one, but still can not get the darn thing to update via cron. I've got it set for every fifteen minutes for testing, so perhaps it will be picked up on the next cycle or two. Hope so. Cheers, Roy
