Not too long ago people used to jump at the chance to help others in here for the pleasure of doing it.

Nowadays it's looking more like a bargain basement with the mighty dollar taking priority over good will.

The economy has forced many of us who used to do it for the sure fun of doing graphics, we now have to charge for our services. I own my own business and it is my sole source of income and the work has been much slower than it was a year ago. Not only that but many feel that they should get something for the work and time that they put in for doing the graphics.

I feel where your coming from BHD. The ole might dollars isn't worth more now than it was then but the concept of it is now a ruling force amungst many of us.


We all need to help out our fellow out of work artist and pay them for their time and effort.

Just my opinion, so don't take any offense !

I disagree. I don't see people asking money for much around here. Free code, free pics, free banners, free advice. I do my best to contribute, and haven't charged a dime. I'm about to open-source a Flash project I did that took about 45 hours of actual work. If that's not in the interests of sharing, I dunno what is.

BHD has a point, all this art for cash stuff belongs in the job offers and requests.

I think Jade should move any requests that mention any financial arrangements there.

BHD when Bad-***-CJ posted his/her need for a new banner logo. As I recall, at one time JD did a site banner for BAJ though the one now posted is different. But still, having offered to pay this time around, I thought that strange because if he/she waited a heart beat BHD would be there to help. I know this for a fact. From time to time bottom surfers troll this forum for business. Eventually you just take them for what there are. I'm not calling BAJ a bottom trowler but the subject would be better placed in one of the other forum categories(perhaps the Job Offers & Requests section). BHD sounds like he's kissing the forum off when in fact we may need one of his hugs.

I avoid a couple of the forum's categories because the assigned moderators blatantly self promote or predicably have a for pay remedies. The money situation is endemic and will only be cured when some moderators stop using this as a business resource...hello PowWeb.

Usually I agree with most of what you say ...but this time I do not agree with your last statement. I do not know the other moderators more then you do but I have been reading posts for several months now and I can say very few users here try and promote themselves and certainly none of the moderators.

However if there is a situation where a job is offered I do not see any reason why any one in this forum can go for it. I personally think that this must be done in the right forum but unless it falls under my forum I cannot do anything except read it.

I am sure that no-one will get rich from these forums beacuse most of the users want free help/support and most users are ready to give this support for free and this is how it should be.

I am sure this applies to all or most of the moderators.

Yes, I agree that if someone has a project they are willing to pay for, it belongs in the Buy, Sell, Trade (Job offers and requests) Forum.

But on the topic of being mercenary for sharing expertise.....I believe that is an option anyone has a right to excercise. There was a time when I rebelled against anything that smelled of Capitalism or profiteering, but that was in the early 70's and I was still living at home with my parents. I have a different perspective now. If you have something worth selling and people are willing to pay you for it, then I say go for it.

For the hair splitters amongst us, I would like to point out that there is a big difference between helping someone learn how to do something on their own and simply doing the work for them. I though it was extremely generous of the people here to do the kind of graphic work that people asked for for free, especially because the people were not asking how to learn a tool or technique. They simply wanted to get a graphic the easy way. But, let me also say that I have never taken a dime for anything I have done here. I have helped many people here privately and in the public sections of the Forums. Some required hours of my time. But I never accepted any money for my help. As long as I felt I was teaching someone something, that was all the reward I wanted. For those of you that can, or want to charge, that is cool, too. We all have our reasons and motivations. It's all good.

Between 1 or 2 sites on powweb i have been here for about 2 years i guess, and i have asked for ALOT of help. And never ONCE has anybody said they would do it for $ only. I just got a logo designed for my site, and ya i paid for it,but i initiated that transaction, but i have no doubt that if i asked on here for one and didnt offer to pay im still sure that i would have gotten one. As a matter of fact i think KOMIK did one for me when i had my Jeep club site, for free.
So i guess im just saying that around here at least i still feel like people jump at the chance to help people.

Your right I did do the one for you jeep site. And I have done another for you again. It would be nice to get some cash for my work but that isn't what this place is about. This is place is about helping other, and I guess I forgot that.

So I have done a logo for you again just as before....only difference is sign all my images. So all I ask is you not remove it, if you use the image.
