non 8.3 WS_FTP? (WS95_FTP.EXE?)

The version of WS_FTP I downloaded from POWWEB is 8.3 limited; that is, it truncates the names of all the files on my local drive to something like INDE~!.HTM (I prefer to use file names longer than eight characters AND to use an HTML extension).

I've downloaded a couple of other FTP clients (CuteFTP is currently on my hard drive), but I can't get connected with them. All settings seem to be the same as WS_FTP.

My wife has a slightly different version of WS_FTP, the executable for which is called "WS95_FTP" and doesn't have the 8.3 limitation. I haven't been able to find this anywhere on the web.

WS_FTP connects just fine and dandy.

I use ws_ftp95. If you want, I think I might have the install exe on my hard disk which i can hunt down and upload on my ftp.. if you want it.

CuteFTP does not work properly in auto mode while uploading .cgi files :( :p


There are many "free" FTP which are as good as paid ones, search in cnet ;)

SmartFTP (http://www.smartftp.com) is the BEST and FREE for the FULL VERSION!

I use CuteFTP 4.0, for biz sites and smartftp for personal site, found smartftp later, but licensed CuteFTP, so that is the only reason I use it.

CuteFTP will take a while to connect sometimes to powweb for some reason, connects fine, but takes awhile for the Welcome screen.
They recommend Anonymous setting, but have better luck with Normal setting. I'm on jupiter server, takes awhile to connect, but fly afterwards!

[edited by admins] WS_FTP works flawlessly w/ Powweb's servers IF you know what your doing.

On CuteFTP, I don't use auto-mode.... It is easy, it opens up you click edit, second tab, binary for uploading .tar, .pl and pictures, jpg, gif, etc...
ASCII for everything else.
NO program can auto-mode 100%
