View Full Version : More log file problems/questions....

I've tried with no luck to set up the cron/webalizer deal. Yes, I've followed the directions (both Sandys and the one in the tutorials), tried different ftp programs, different notepads even two different computers, until I'm blue in the face. I really don't give a rats behind if I use Webalizer or AWstats or even if it's done automatically. I'm fine with downloading my log files myself!
So here are the questions:

Are the log files still accumulated with the Powweb webstats in the off position so that they can be ftp'd to my hard drive? If you delete the access log file, will it regenerate it's self?

Oh, speaking of downloading the log files, just tried and they wouldn't budge. The error says 'failed to open file access_log'
'file error on WRITE' and when I logged in again (thinking it was just a glitch) it (WS FTP-le) asked if I wanted to resume downloading. I clicked yes, then it said access was denied.
What a day!

I would be very happy to just start over from scratch. I have downloaded my past log files without problem and have used
WebLog Expert Lite to store them and analyze. Why can't I download them now? Is it because I turned off Webstats in OPS while trying to do the crontab thingy?

Also, found a thread from January about webstats being moved to OPS (Starr where are you?) but can't find the thread now.

thanks for your time....

Hi rancher,

Powweb writes the acces_log file even if Webstats is off. Do not try to delete it since Powweb might try to write to it as you site gets visits. Download the acces_log.zip!

BTW, acces_log is written from Sunday to Sunday continously. On Sunday evening, acces_log is zipped to acces_log.zip: acces_log gets empty and the new zip file replaces the one from the last week. In other ways:

acces_log contains your site's logs from last Sunday till now
acces_log.zip contains your site's logs from the Sunday before last Sunday till last Sunday.

So, if you want to keep all your logs, you should download acces_log.zip every week.

Thanks for the explanation. What I don't understand is why the log file (access_log) keeps getting bigger. Shouldn't it fall back to zero or something close each time it's rolled over?

Hi Rancher..

Yes, if the rollover runs as expected, the log starts over as soon as the Sunday rollover is comleted.
