I just purchased hosting with powweb. I have published about 5 websites using 2 other host with no problems. However, when I read the step by step manual it list these FTP clients you can download. Well I do a lot of graphics and designing of elements, and music downloads and the last thing I need is to download software that is not necessary. I am using NetObjects Fusion 7.0. I am almost sure that within NetObjects there is a FTP client, I assume that when I push publish that is the what comes up and that is what I have used in the past to publish my sites with. It isn't on the list, but I really think it does exactly the same thing. Anyway everytime I try to publish I get a message cannot make the FTP connection. So it is trying to connect via FTP, but is not successful. I asked for tech support the response was they can't help me if I am using a third party language. I don't think NetObjects is foreign, on the contrary it is very user friendly, I love it, every other host it has published to utilizing the FTP publishing utility with the program. I think either something I am doing is wrong, or something on Powwebs end is wrong. I don't know but I need to know if the utility I use within NetObjects Fusion to publish with is an FTP" client, if it is compatible to publish to Powweb with. Anyone know if it is ok to use or publish within NetObjects???? Or do I have to download the ones that they list in their step by step manual. They won't talk to me because I use a different 3rd party language, but I am speaking in English none the less. HELP.

Cathykopasek don't worry. Fusion does have built in FTP client software. I've been using Fusion 7 for a year now and design all my sites and clients sites with it. Works great! Check your publishing settings:

FTP Host: mine looks like (ftp01.powweb.com)
Directory: make sure to put (htdocs)
User name: Your main account name
Password: Obvious

That's really about it. You might want to click on advanced in your publish settings and make sure you are set at port 21 and it hadn't been accidentally changed. Good luck!

Your response has helped tremendously. Normally I would upload to giftwebpages.com. In otherwords with other hosting services in the FTP host box you would put your domain name. Where I am getting confused is that I am uploading to the temporary domain of giftwebpagescom.powweb.com. So that is what I have been putting in the FTP client box. I was just told by an e-mail from powweb after they read this that I need to put in ftp02.powweb.com but I didn't know where. Since you actually use NetObjects and know the FTP client within the program your response was like gold. Thank you Thank you. (their customer service is quit impressive and very fast, and they keep late hours, that is good, I love this forum thing too, great service they provide)

I'm glad I could help. I found that getting some of the settings to work can be the biggest pain in site building. I like Fusion alot. It's good for a moderately knowledgable person who doesn't have the time to get past the learing curve of say DreamWeaver. I find more and more ways to squeeze all I can from that little program. Here are my latest Fusion 7 sites:

www.MJDGraphicDesigns.com (mine)
www.RIComputerTech.com (also mine)
www.OceanStateClassified.com (built for client)
www.ClassicCasualz.com (another client)

Good luck!!! Don't forget to use this forum, cause it can really hold alot of answers and the people are usually pretty decent.

My site is publishing as I write this. I probably shouldn't use my computer but couldn't wait to tell you. I will browse your sites. As soon as my site is published you can take a look see. It is not yet completed. It is a business idea I have that I was not able to find anything quite like it on the net. I found some sites that offer birth announcements, but they are templates, boring and plain. I found one that offered birthday greetings that were published on the internet, but they too were templates boring and not customized. I was able to get www.giftwebpages.com because there isn't anything like it. I don't know what else you would call a web page that is like a birthday greeting, or like sending flowers. Also I will give the recevier and the send a screen saver to keep forever with the gift web page and the music that is on the gift page. I am in the process of trademarking Gift Web Page and AnnounSite (for announcements such as birth, wedding, engagement, graduation) My next step is to market. Anyway on www.giftwebpages.com I have a temporary site that is my portfolio until I complete the business website offering Gift Web Pages, AnnounSites, and business and or custom websites. My knowledge is all self taught and could use a lot more. So my web designing for business sites is limited to smaller business without a lot frills in regards to flashing, video talking, data processing, type sites. In regards to decorative or custom designing I can do that to some extent as well. I am a bit frilly, girly, etc. in my style. But I can do professional sites, but like the frilly stuff. So the gift web page idea is perfect for what I like to do. First lets say Debbie would get an e-mail with a gift box background and bow, etc. best mood setting would be in an office environment when at work. The e-mail says, "Michael Smith (reciepient's boyfriend let say) has a special custom made gift waiting for you to open. Please click the below link to open your gift. Then you will come to a page with a lot of really pretty gift boxes, you know wrapped with bow, ribbon, etc. they all have names on them, Debbie would locate the gift box with her name on it and click with mouse, then her Gift Web Pages opens to a beautfully custom design web page that plays music that corresponds to whatever message Michael Smith wants to send. On my website there will be 10 samples to view and you can also view the actual gift web pages to see more or get more ideas if someone was thinking about sending one. Cost is 45.00 also they get the screen saver. The gift page stays published on internet for 60 days. When publishing of my not yet completed site is done please take look and see at the temporary URL www.giftwebpagescom.powweb.com. I am hoping that the music will play as soon as page opens, this is a concern of mine since my parents site doesn't work that way. When I look in Preview mode it does play, when I look at site in local publish mode works great, I hope like anything that when it is published on the internet the music syncronizes right, if not my idea is diminished considerably. If you know anything about music in NetObjects, please share. I can have the receiver push a music note to play, but it is so much more touching when it starts by itself, I don't know maybe it isn't as crucial as I think, but I am sure I am not too off on my feelings about starting by itself, or pushing a music note. ANYONE OUT THERE THAT KNOWS CAN OFFER ADVICE TOO. PLEASE. I WILL LET YOU KNOW IF THE MUSIC WORKS ON THIS SITE. I JUST KNOW THAT SINCE IT ISN'T ON www.jimandpeggyryan.com it probably won't on this one either. Thanks for all your help. I will go check publishing status. With music it takes forever. I can't stand not using my computer for that long.

which site did you look at? www.giftwebpagescom.powweb.com is still publishing only 15% done, takes forever when there is music. My parents site the music starts like 5 minutes after you open a page. My www.giftwebpages.com (temporary portfolio) doesn't have music.

Thanks for your help,
Cathy

Ok I've gotta get going but I went to http://www.giftwebpages.com/ and music does load up. It's classical with violins and such. After a short period of time the music fades in and out though. Just wanted you to know. Also, I clicked on the other one: www.giftwebpagescom.powweb.com and I get a DNS error. The url looks as though it may be wrong. Good luck!

I think did put one song on my portfolio site some Mozart, but thought I removed, so that means that I need to republish that site again which I am having trouble with uplink earth in regards to my uploads display right away on the internet, thank you again, oh www.giftwebpagescom.powweb.com is a temporary site until the DNS servers take hold, and I am in the process of publishing as I write this my almost completed business site for the gift pages. so I guess you have to access the www.giftwebpagescom.powweb, but it is in the middle of publishing right now and probably would pop an error message out. thank you so much again, I just love this forum thing it is helpful, resourceful, and fun. Byeee, when my almost completed site is done publishing could take hours so maybe tomorrow you could look see and tell me what you think about my idea and site. I could really use some input, critics, etc. I think it is a great idea, but maybe it has been tried and failed, but that doesn't mean I will fail. I marketed books and they are hard to sell. Nobody hardly reads anymore with the internet, videos, tv documentaries, and the competetion for books is unbeleivable, yet I was successful in marketing the books that were good. On one book that I did cover design for and published Shoplifters vs. Retailers the rights of both, MSN NBC did a shoplifting special that was an hour long and they invited the author to be one of the expert guest. He is security and loss prevention consultant. Anyway they zoomed in on my cover of the book. It is my claim to fame. Even though nobody knew I designed it and if they did they don't know who I am anyway, point being that he was invited to do the show based on the success of the book, the book is a really good book, but no matter how good if it isn't marketed right it will go nowhere. So I think gift pages good idea, now I need to market it right, and you never know. Thanks again. Your special!

Also I want you to know I can't wait to go see your websites, but I need to stay off my computer for a while because the publishing hasn't moved from 15% in a long time. I will look at them first thing in the morning I need to get away from my computer and let it publish the site and not touch all night. My parents site took 13 hours to publish without touching my computer at all for 13 whole hours, so I am going to do that now and I anxiously look forward to checking out your sites in the morning. If there is anything I really like but don't know how to do can I ask for your expetise and instruction. Like I said I am totally self taught in graphic design and in website design, there is so much I don't know and don't even know exist. However, explaining to me is not hard in an e-mail because I am very computer literate, have working on them since 1990 before Windows, or before I had Windows, I think it just came out, so I go back to DOS. I have fixed, configured, created databases, and alot more, so I understand a lot, I just hate reading the help things, they are more complicated than it really is. thank you again, I will reply tomorrow on your sites, nighty night.

I think you have a great idea and if you apply yourself you will achieve what you're looking for. I have also found through personal experience that no matter how great you are or how spectacular your product/idea is, unless you can market it correctly in an easy "to get" attractive way, you will never reach even half your potential. The idea is really original and I wouldn't go around telling everyone about it. Funny how fast people will try to cash in on someone elses great idea. Just market the living crap out of it! Get on Google, MSN, Excite, Yahoo and it'll work. I'll check out your site tomorrow afternoon and post any results I see. Have fun and goodnight!

Hi!

Just as a quick clarification... the temporary URL would be:

http://giftwebpagescom.powweb.com/

There is no "www' included as "giftwebpagescom" is the subdomain of PowWeb.com until your URL can finish transfering. :)

Good luck!

Your right about not telling everyone, but I am about a week away from finishing the site, it took months to design it. There is other similiar things on the internet, but they aren't anything like mine in regards to custom, decorative, etc. Also, the paperwork is in the process of getting a trademark for Gift Web Pages and AnnounSites. And best of all I have www.giftwebpages.com. My business site however, is called A Site to Behold. If I can get it going and I am successful everyone will know anyway. Others will start a site offering the same thing. Like florist that send flowers. but the person that has www.flowers.com is in like flynn. They are a direct hit. If it goes good, what else would call them but Gift Web Pages? My domain is a direct hit. If goes good there will be a flood of websites doing the same thing, but I will be the first and the I will have the trademark on the name which no one else legally can call them. I don't know what else anyone would call them though. Thanks for your input, I have enjoyed our cyberspace conversations.

Just thought I'd Nose in here and tell you what I am seeing. I really like your idea and your site. The music comes in right now (ATT Broadband Connection) Your Order Screen doesn't work for me, but I am using Windows XP and I have a problem right now with Virtual Machine, so if you are using Virtual Machine imagery, it may not work for me. I need to figure out what I have to do to fix that problem, as there are quite a few sites that I get the message I have to update my Java and that is why I can't get all the graphics.

I don't know where you get all your neat Graphics and Music, but I think you have a class act and it will go over big. I am about where you are now as far as PowWeb goes. I have been uploading my site using ftp-le, but I still can't view it on Pow Web, yet. I tried yours using both URLs and they both work fine. Mine still is not accessible. You can see what I am doing at http://www.northupfamily.com. So far, I am doing nothing commercial, but my plan is to duplicate the Domain on Pow Web, except it will be www.northupfamily.biz and it will have a Business slant, and the business end of the other domain will be modified to drop all business aspects. So, in the end, I will have two domains, one for business and one free. The graphics will be in both places and will act as back-up storage, one for the other. The page files for both sites will be stored in my computer. I have a very extensive Northup Family Genealogy site and that is all free. I also carry that site on Tripod at http://northup_family.tripod.com/front.html

Keep in touch, if you are interested at all and we can critique each other.

Thank you for your kind words and time. Don't worry it is not you, my site is almost done, it isn't done yet. The order page is one of the pages not yet done. I download all of the music. For instance on the bird of feather flock together page, I typed in Birds of a feather and low and behold there is actually a song called "Birds of a feather" Also I love music, I was a teenager in the 70's I love classic rock, but I also love many types of music and a great memory and know a lot of song titles and the artisit. Where I used work we had music play through our phones and had CD day. Anytime anyone wanted to know who sang this song or what this song is they came to me. I would be right about 95% of the time. Well I was right 100% of the time, but only knew the answer about 95% of the time. If I don't know I don't know, but if I do then I am right. I hate being wrong so if I am not for sure, I say, "I don't know that answer", then I am never wrong. Also, thank you for compliment on my graphics, I made them myself. For instance on the lace pages, I went to a website that sells lace, I saved the lace pictures to my hard drive, brought into photoshop and got rid of the background saved as transparent background gif's then pieced the top banners, the side banners together. The feather one, I saved some feather clipart I found and did the same thing again. I am so glad someone appreciates my work. it takes a lot of time, and a certain amount of creativity and talent, in which I am proud of. My creativity is something that many people comment on that know me, I never knew it was special until I realized that not everyone can do some of the things that I have done. You should see my southern bell teddy bears, I can't sew from a pattern, but I made my own patterns and created the most beautiful southern bell clothing, hats, accessories you have ever seen. People would offer me anywhere from 250.00 - 600.00 to buy one, but I couldn't sell them because of the time, love, and each one came out completely different, I couldn't duplicate them. They were my art. Thank you so much again, the people that have dial up are right however, my site will only appeal to those that have systems capable of handling the large graphic files and music files. My priority is my computer and having the best before grocercies, maybe they are screwed up to some, but to me my graphic designing is my life. I would be totally insane by now if I was dealing with a dial up. Even your cleanest and smallest websites take forever to load. I think with today's technology there should be no problem having a site that is grahical and has music. I probably just need more knowledge; I hope to acquire that from this forum, probably need to take a class too. I am 100% self taught in both graphics and websites. Thank you again for your time, appreciation of my art work, and your very kind words. Good luck with your endeavors, when your site is up send me the link to take a look see, I would love doing that for you. ckopasek@cox.net. Another site of mine you might also appreciate is an 50th anniversary site for my parents. It took 3 months about 50 hours a week to design. It became much more work than I had originally anticipated. see at www.jimandpeggyryan.com, my parents have loved this gift of a website more than any other gift they have ever received. They show it off and bragg about me to their friends, relatives, and even have gotten in touch with friends they haven't contacted in years just to have look at it. That alone, talking with old friends, has made it really worth the time I put into it. They are, no doubt worth the time and much more, but for them it has brought them together with some old friends. I can only do 1 music selection per page, so once you arrow down to the next page you have to click music notes to play the songs, the songs are all relative to each page, I am pretty proud of the final outcome, but I got sick of working on it. Thanks again and good luck.

As you may have found Microsoft no longer supports automatic download of virtual machine for XP. You can get it It's realy just java) free from the makers at sun java. http://java.sun.com/getjava/index.html If I sold as much dodgie software as Microsoft I'd have been shut down a long time ago.

Hey, Croc, Thanks Tons. I went right over there and got it done. That has been bugging me for quite a while. I guess I don't really blame Microsoft. It is the Government that shut them down on that issue, but they needed to have their hand slapped a couple times, so I agree with that concept as well. I figured I would have to buy a product and most sites load pretty good without it, so I was just letting it go, thinking the next version of Windows I get would have the problem resolved. Seems like you have to upgrade every year or two anyway.
