View Full Version : My computer wont boot!!!!!
nothing shows on my monitor when i turn it on.
the harddisk, fan works fine.
but the heatsink is cold, which mean my cpu is cold too.
since there are lights on my pc case,
so i dont think that the mb is damaged.
then i installed the "D-Bracket 2" on the pc.
it was a thing which came with the mb and which use graphic signals to help users understanding their system.
if the cpu is not installed properly or damaged,
then it will show 4 red lights. and it did show 4 red lights! :\
then my friend came to me today and tried his cpu on my mb.
but the results was the same!
why? those 4 lights are confusing me.
its impossible that his cpu is damaged too.
if my cpu is dead:
then why wouldn't my friend's cpu work on my mb?
if my mb is dead:
then why i have lights, and the fan is running?
and why can my cpu be dead if i can the hsf working? ????
please help...
well, if the cpu is inserted properly (I'm sure it is), and two different CPUs do that same thing, it has to be your motherboard.
There's lots of different parts to a motherboard... the reason everything else works is probably because the only part that's broken has to do with the CPU or socket or something.
Anyway, to me it sounds like a shot mobo.
Test your video card.
Many mobo's check for good video and if not found then nothing fires, thus the CPU doesn't fire so it's cool.
Have your friend take your CPU and test it in his mobo to make sure it's working.

yes, i have tried to put a different video card on it.
but still didn't work. :\
and my friends mb didn't support my cpu :(

Also check RAM. Faulty RAM can do this as well.
how to check ram. ?
isnt it only 1 way to fit ? :\
Hey All,
Yes, ram only fits in one way, however try reseating the ram, or pick up another stick of ram that is known to be good.
I have done a number of motherboard upgrades for my customers. Taking a 400 mhz to 700 mhz, and 1.4 ghz to 2.4 ghz.
Another thing to check is make sure you monitor cable is pluged into the video card.
You mentioned that when you power up the computer that the lights on the front of the computer all light up and are solid. That could mean you have either the hard drive or floppy drive ribbon cable inserted backwards. This would also prevent the computer from booting.
The ide ribbon cables have a red stripe on pin 1, same with the floppy drive cables. I have reversed the cables many of times. When you try to boot the computer case's lights will stay solid.
The motherboard ide slots may have a 1 and 40 printed on the circut board. Some ide slots and cables may not be keyed, so reversing the cables can be done by accident.
An ide hard drive, if not keyed should have the red stripe faceing towards the molex power cable.
If all else fails, buy a motherboard/processor combo. I have bought many mb/combo's from bananapc.com

A common problem, I face these everyday. Follow these steps
Wait, Before you do the below on the back of the power supply there is a red switch, make sure it is set to the max voltage (like my power supply is 300 Watts, One time someone bumped into my PC and moved the switch down so everything was working, however the PC would not boot or show anything, because it was not getting enough power. Just because it is moving and making sound, don't mean it is getting enough power to function properly) If it is switched to the correct one, then power down the PC and try the below.
If that checks out, on your System Board you will see a battery. Unplug your PC and Remove the battery, wait 10 min and plug in your PC without the Battery. Even if something is broken, removing the batt, will reset everything so you will see something. From there it will take you to the normal boot screen where everything is detected. Just watch carefully and make sure everything is detected. If something is not it usually will show you in BIOS.
1.) Pull out everything in your PC that is not needed (Like Audio Card, Any attached USB Devices) and leave it with the basic components which are: A Mouse, A keyboard, A Video Card, RAM, Processor, System Board, Power Supply, Fans and a Monitor. Try to start your PC. If it works the we know something you pulled out was bad in your PC.
If it does work, then start putting in things one by one and try to boot. If it works with once device, keep it in and put in another until you get the same problem, then when it don't boot you will know what is wrong.
If it don't work, then you want to check the following
1.) Check the RAM for burn marks or any signs of damage. If you have another PC, you may want to take the ram from it and swap it to the PC that don't work, If it works then Move to the processor
2.) Check the Processor for heat damage (Also I would use the same process as I did with the RAM for the Processor if available), If it works then move to the power supply.
3.) Check and make sure it is putting out enough juce. Sometimes when they get old, they stop putting out enough power to work.
4.) If all those check out, then the Final thing to check is the System Board. If it is the system board and it is a brand name PC, and out of warntee, don't bother buying a replacement, as I had that happen to me and for the system board alone, I could just buy a new PC (So thats what I did, was build my own).
Anyways if it all checks out, then it may be your BIOS or a BIOS Virus. (Usually not)
If you have tried everything, then the best thing to do is pick up your PC and throw it towards the ground as HARD as you can. Maybe the impact will cause it to start working once more and if not, just think its a good to remove stress. lol
Good luck man,
