View Full Version : virus uploaded to server?

I am wondering if a virus on a puter could have been uploaded via FTP to the server? If so, is it possible that a virus would start corrupting files and cause trouble with a message board?
How would I check the server for a virus? If it's infected, how do I clean it up? If my server space is infected, could that virus also spread to others on the server?

I suppose it could technically be possible, but it's unlikely. I assume you're running Windows. As far as I know, there are few (or no) viruses that run on both windows and FreeBSD (which is what Powweb is on).
Also, technically, a virus is a compiled thing. So, unless you uploaded some sort of compiled executable, there are no viruses on your website. Of course, it's possible to have a script that behaves like a virus, so that could possibly have happened. Still, the chances are really remote to none.

I agree, the chances slim to none.

Of course you can upload infected files.
The nature of an email borne virus or worm is to take a file at random from your machine infect and self send. These self excuting packages leave traces on your machine and usualy require a custom tool to fully remove. So it is possible to accidently upload an infected file to your server space. However once there it's useless it cannot harm the server or message board. Powweb is not a windows server and Unix viruses are rare. If you uploaded the actual self execute package it's useless to, unless someone saves the page offline or leeches your files it may then execute from their machine.
How to find a viral file on your server space ? You would need to know the name of the infected file and manualy remove. Or download (leech) your entire site and scan localy. I doubt powweb runs server protect or any ftp antivirus software. It would slow the systems to much.
If you suspect a virus check it here
