View Full Version : Counters
I am trying to find a good free counter for my site, because the ones that come in front page arn't very good. They count everyone that comes in and everytime, I want a counter with cookies so if I got to my web site 30 times in one day it doesn't count me 30 times it only counts me once. Any help would be appreciated. :D

Thanks
I've used the transparent and one of the visible counters from The Counter.com (http://thecounter.com/) . Very nice -- especially the details that are provided. It also allowed you to use cookies so people wouldn't be counted so much.
The only thing though...I think they just recently switched it to where you have to pay to see the details. However, the basic counter will still work. So will the cookie. Plus, you'll get a weekly e-mail that tells you how many people visited your site (and breaks it down by day). Too bad they started charging for the detailed version...that was very nice.

i use that one, and i think its pretty good.
You can just put the little image on your site...
they have a transparent one but i think you have to pay for it

Ever try a LiveCounter? www.livecounter.com
It's a java applet/cgi script that displays a counter and it updates on the screen as people hit your site.
I have it running at the the bottom of my main page.

Did you use it here on Powweb or some other provider. I only had luck here on Powweb. Could have something to do with Unix. My other providers were always NT.

It wasnt on powweb, it was on hypermart *scream* i hated their hosting..
Maybe Ill try livecounter again here on powweb, but i like the idea of not openly displaying the hit count... i like having to click thru and then seeing all the stats..
I think I have it set up so only I can see my stats

Yeah I agree, I use LiveCounter only for show. I use eXtremeTracking as my real counter and have it completely hidden from the user. Grapic size = 1x1.. hehe

eXtremeTracking? Yeah it's free unless you want to track more than one page and have it private. I find just tracking your index or main page good enough and I don't care if users see my stats.

I only track my main page (although i should track some of the others.. i offer a few services and i think id like to know which ones are being used most... but it all takes time and i dont have much)
I dont like users seeing my stats.. maybe ill just stick to sitemeter. Theyre doing an all right job.

True, stick to what works. SiteMeter is great. I used to have WebTrends stats with my old server (cause it was free with my account). I consider them the absolute best.
Yeah I would like to track my other pages.. but I'll be going from 700 static html pages and 7000 text files down to about a dozen php files and a MySQL database to run my site, so there is not much left to track.. unless I can log the SELECT statments ;)
:D Everyone,
Thank you for all the help with the counters. I wound up using the SiteMeter counters. I am most likely going to implement the Java Script one. But again thank you all for your help. If I have any other questions on stuff, I will post it up. :D

If you just want a counter your set up your own script so you don't have to conect to a third party server slowing down your load time.
Here are some examples:

If it the stats you want
If it's the stats you want Powweb offers Webalizer (http://www.mrunix.net/webalizer/). All you need to do is email them and request it be set up for you. If you want to customize it more to your needs visit the link and download the instructions. All you need to do is midify the .confg file for the program. It's found in your etc directory.

I have had good luck with the AXS site tracking system. It's free, it's customizable, it's under your control. Works great once you get it set up and you can cookie your visits so it ignores you.
