View Full Version : bandwidth monitoring?

it seems that my site has exceeded the 12 GB monthly bandwidth and I have until the end of the day to keep my service going...

I'm thinking the additional $8 per GB per month is going to add up quickly, but I'm not sure how much I'm going over the limit.

I was sent an email that " your daily "average" is 1155 MB which comes out to 3465 MB per month"

that doesn't make sense.... shouldn't it be 34560 MB? if so, then yeah, I'm over. but if not, ( 1000 MB = 1 GB,)
shouldn't I be okay?

Is there any place on POWWEB that one can check how much bandwidth is being used for data transfer?

I'm really confused, and this 24 hour deadline to FAX something. sucks.

If your daily average is 1155MB, than your monthly trasnfer is 34650MBs, or 34.650GBs. This is nearly 3 times the allotted amount. If you're having this kind of bandwidth, might I suggest a dedicated server or at least another host which offers a high bandwidth amount?

With that amount of Bandwidth monthly, you'll be paying around $184 extra a month. You should be able to find a good affordable dedicated server for that or less.

Presently, there is no way to monitor your bandwidth.

hmm, I was afraid of that.. Well it's been fun guys. Maybe someday there will be a better way to show archived pics.

Several ideas come to mind. I see that you're using 256 color gifs. You could try reducing them to 16 colors or even reducing the size some to reduce the overall file size. You could also try making the archive for members only. This would reduce the amount of bandwidth and even put some money in your pocket.

Just some suggestion. Hope you can get the "bandwidth monster" to go away :)

i checked your stats. your site averages about 1300 ppl a day, how'd you get it over 12gigs?

see? that;s what I don't know... I wish there was a way to check. but there isn't...so I'm finding another host as a back up, just incase this one DOES boot me.
I'm shrinking some of the images to as small as they can go without losing quality. and getting rid of some extraneous stuff.

It did seem extreme that I could have 30 GB of traffic when 4 months ago I was barely over THREE GB at another sever.

ah well, I'm still learning about this stuff.

Well, you frontpage is about 204k (including the page and all onsite graphics). With an average of 1300 visitors a day, that would make the daily total around 265,200K or roughly 265MB's. Stretched out over a 30 day month, that would equal around 7956MB's or 7.956GB's.

Remember now, this is just the main page being calculated here. Most visitors will visit more than just the frontpage.

Also, FTP (both up and down) are added into this mix and soon Email will be too.

Now can we see where the bandwidth is going? Just thought I'd point this out.

thanks for the explaination manninc. I can see how getting all these hits to the site is starting to backfire.

we can see where the bandwidth is going now...or rather, I can....I guess you already knew. Just thought I'd point that out.

No problem at all. I'm glad I was able to shed some light on the Bandwidth issues you're facing.
