Here's one posed to me that I can't figure out

Not my computer.

Background: Windows XP, AOL, Dialup, recent problem (2-3 weeks) No major changes done to computer in last few months.

Problem: no uploading, no attaching files. The person cannot upload any files to the internet (HTTP) the person cannot use Email attachments (they never arrive) via Hotmail OR AOL.
Problem exists in the default installed AOL provided browser, Communicator, Navigator and IE.

Anyone have any clues?

it probably is AOL. What version of AOL is it?

AOL 5 and newer (maybe 4, dunno about that) switches out the winsock file with its own, really crappy version. It probably got corrupted and screwed everything up.

Of course, this is a total guess and I could be totally wrong. If you wanna try restoring the old winsocks, you can probably use system file checker to do it.

Previous versions of windows had a better system file checker than XP. :/ Anyway, just drop to dos and type

sfc /scannow and see if it picks anything up.

Also, I found a way here to reinitialize the tcp/ip stack. May be worth a try. Specifically message #2.
