I have a Thinkpad 600 that started acting up when I tried to access my netscape email, so I reinstalled the OS. Since then, I've had this problem.

1.) I reinstall Windows 95

2.) I upgrade Windows 95 to Window 98 SE

3.) I install the video driver supplied by IBM - it's from Neomagic

4.) I change the display settings from 640X480 to 1028X768

5.) Reboot windows

6.) System hangs and doesn't reload.

I've changed the video driver and I can reload windows fine with other drivers but the new settings never take place and it stays at 640X480. I will also get an error that says 'there is a problem with your display settings.'

I've never had this problem before, and the display is capable of higher resolutions. I've tried changing the monitor type, setting the hardware accelerator to zero and a few other things but nothing works.

I've also reinstalled windows 3 times with two different disks.

If you know how to fix my computer, please let me know. :)

First off, there is no need to install 95 prior to using your 98se upgrade CD. Installing an OS over the top of another will often cause more problems than it helps.

You can start an install of 98se upgrade on an empty drive, setup will ask at some point where your previous OS is located. At that point you can simply insert the 95 CD and point the setup program to your CD drive. All it needs is proof that you actually have a copy of the previous OS, the OS does NOT need to be installed.

I would suggest checking the IBM site for an updated video driver for your system. I checked and it seems that Neomagic no longer supports these, so IBM is the only place for you to look for an update.

I didn't know you could install windows 98 straight from the upgrade disk. Thanks.

I always go to IBMs site for the latest driver, which is what is causing this problem. It doesn't seem to work, which is weird because it always has before.

I'm probably going to try to reinstall the OS again today. I remember tinkering with the BIOS a while back so I'll try resetting them. Otherwise I'm lost on this.

1. Make sure that it is using the correct drivers. Go into "Display Properties" > "Settings" > "Advanced" and then to the "Adapter" tab. Make sure that your correct adapter is listed there.

2. Check the device manager (right click My Computer then select "Properties" then the "Device Manager" tab) for any instance of an "Other" being listed with a yellow exclamation mark. Often seen display drivers get defined as such during the initial install.

Make sure to reboot between steps 3) and 4).
