View Full Version : Super Easy PHP Photo Gallery
I must have installed (or tried to install...) a dozen or more photo galleries in the past couple days. I finally settled on Smart Photo Gallery (SPG) because it was...SIMPLE! Its PHP, took less than 5 minutes (I'm serious) to install (compared to -hours- on some others...) and does it all for me.... except allow picture captions. So I'll live without those.
To set it up, run the intuitive installer that figures everything out for you automatically. To tweak it, you just call the script's admin mode. Tell it how many pictures you're sending up (or go to a dozen other admin functions) and it prepares a browse/select button for each of them. Pick'em all out, hit UPLOAD, then sit back while it uploads the files for you, thumbnails them, puts'em all in the right place, etc. You don't need MySQL or even FTP (aside from installing the script) to display your photos, just tell folks where the album is.
Here's My Current Test Album (http://www.wordforlife.com/programs/SPG) showing some pictures one of my friends took on a mission trip to Mexico.
Get the beginner-friendly freeware script at: http://smart.ideck.org/spg/
Now if anyone has something this simple that also allows me to put customer captions on, let me know.
I'm posting this message to help others looking for a simple gallery that is easy to install, very configurable, free, needs no MySQL and works great.

Have you tried Gallery (http://gallery.menalto.com/)?
http://help.powweb.com/tutorials/php/gallery.php
Supports jhead : which extracts the EXIF information (size, date, etc) from digital photos.
Supports netpbm : which allows higher detail in thumbs and the binaries reside in your folder.
Supports multiple customization fields, configurable upon setup.
Comes will multiple languages, already installed.
I just worked with another user on this thread setting up Gallery
http://forum.powweb.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=25369
I will also be porting it out to my Gallery Skins (http://pownuke.com/galleryskins/) sometime in the next couple weeks. The version on there now is 1.3.3 and the new version 1.4 RC1 has tons of new code, so I need to redo the Skins.
Oh, It is free, no Mysql and comes with a Remote (mass photo) uploader for windows operators.
I am also part of the Gallery Team, so any questions just ask!

Actually, Gallery was the first thing that got me interested in this. But my visits to the Gallery site (in my level of INexperience) made it sound more like something that had to be run from the local console which of course I cannot do. The one I used (SPG) had a "wizard" for all of the setup, it took only minutes. And as much as I like the look and feel of Gallery in the many places I've seen it, it did not look like a project for beginners
If I'm wrong on that, then I'll go for it. I must have missed SOMETHING because in my reading of it, I was fairly certain it requred MySQL.
You see, the problem with inexperience is you don't know what to look for or what questions to ask.... :(

Ok Jade, off to the Gallery page I went, as Step One of the tutorials said "Download the files..." so off I go to http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=7130 to get them.
STOP ITEM: There must be 40 different packages and options there, which got me last time, too. What package do I need? I assume RC-2 is the remote control? What is the appropriate binary files to run Gallery on PW?
Would it be gallery-1.3.4-pl1.tar.gz?
I thought RC-2 meant "Release Candidate 2."
:)

Ok, in the interim awaiting your reply I took a guess and downloaded that one I quoted.
Warning Everybody: installing Gallery takes 3 days and 22 minutes for a total newcomer:
Three days to download and play with everything else you could find that you thought would work since you couldn't figure out Gallery, and 22 minutes to have Galley installed and working following Jade's tutorial. :D
So... do you think I should reinstall using RC2, or are the differences worthwhile? "Release Candidate" to me, in my limited experience, translates into a "Current project that works most of the time but might not work for you and is not ready for 48-year old newcomers that might be blown away by something it does" type of release.
Thanks for your help. Now I have what I really wanted in the first place. The experience of other programs was worth it though, as I learned a -lot- by troubleshooting the various issues that came up (mainly my fault) along the way. Learning how to fix errors you caused yourself is very valuable...

:D
No the one you downloaded is just fine, it doesn't have the extras that 1.4 RC2 has. But it will work.
Bharat & Team only release a secure product, the minor tweaks that may happen are usually because it is from feedback from those people who install it on different setups. I have installed almost every release they have put out since I found Gallery back in February. And have had no problems with it at all on Powweb.
Let me know if you need any more help.
=)
