View Full Version : FTP help moving from Valueweb to Powerweb. Is there an easier way?
I am in the process of moving all my files from Valueweb to Powweb. My problem is that my pages are only accessible through FTP. Now it appears I need to move all these files in the htdocs folder? Is that correct? This has never been so complicated. I am sorry, just never heard of such a thing. I only have until the 27th of the month to move my files or pay Valueweb to keep hosting my site. I am beginning to wonder if paying the lower rates is worth my time. Is there an easier way to delete all my files and just start over. I use CuteFTP, have a cable connection, and 150 MB worth of files to move.
Hi Doree: I've moved a number of sites from other servers to Powweb. Set up your FTP client (Cute FTP) with the information sent to you by Powweb in their initial letter. When FTP connects you will see three or four files on the Powweb side, one of which is htdocs. Click on that file to open then start transfering your files over from your hard drive. It's pretty cut and dried. Once everything is transfered you can check the functionality of your Powweb account via the temp url (also in your original letter).
Don't forget to initiate a DNS change with your registrar, then be patient
In case I don't understand what you mean by your files only being accessible thru ftp, I apologize. Maybe valueweb has a different system than other hosting companies. Never the less, if they are accessable but not on your hard drive you should be able to download them. Hope I haven't confused the issue.
Simply download the files from ValueWeb via FTP to your computer. Then you'll want to log into your PowWeb account and make sure that you upload the files into the htdocs folder the way you have it set up over there.
PowWeb has their servers setup where all files need to be placed under the htdocs folder because this is the correct way under the apache web server. The htdocs folder allows for your files to be viewable via the web.
Once all of your files have been download from ValueWeb and upload under the htdocs folder here, your site should be viewable via your temp address.
A side note. You'll notice the cgi-bin is on the same level as the htdocs folder. While cgi files are best uploaded into this folder, they can be run from anywhere.
Hope this helps!
