Ok.. so if I were using good 'ole Word Perfect.. I'd've been done with this yesterday, but since Word has been forced upon me..

I'm trying to create an updatable Table of Contents. I have added the TC fields, and given the levels.

Only 3 items show.. 1 of which I didn't choose.

So I work & work, read help.. read newsgroups, etc.. and find that if I change all the main categories to Header 6.. for some reason they all show (completely ignoring the TC fields it seems).

Now.. none of my subcategories show.. and they need to. I've tried changing them to header7 (working on the theory that the header choice must do it instead of the TC field as help says) - no go.

help.. please.. I'm gonna go insane here.. where 'o where is my Word Perfect *snif*

So, go back to wordperfect, it will run quite happily under windows....

Anyway, TOCs in Word are run from the header styles (as I think you have guessed) Header1 will be level 1 Header2 level 2 etc..

after you have set each header style, insert -> index and tables

Then select the TOC tab then make show levels = 2 and hey presto your 2 level TOC.

All works no problem, provided you knew from the start that you planned to have a TOC and therefore planned and used the heading styles witin the document.

hope this helps
