My webstats have always worked and they have not updated in October.

Has anyone had that?

What could be causing that?

I was happy with the results of webstats and do not wish to install a different program. Can anyone tell me how to fix this?

Could the two problems be related?

I'm thinking Powweb is working on something right now, and wont respond until they have something solid to tell us...

Personally, I hope it stays this way because it would keep me from having to change the .conf file every time I miss a day for updating (I use AWStats because of the unreliability of whatever it is that Powweb offers).

Maybe from here on out the access_log will be a weekly thing instead of a daily thing.

My logs did not rollover again last night on Comet. I wonder if we are in for another of the after-the-fact change announcements. It would be nice if we were kept appraised of what is going on so we could plan and act accordingly.

I really do not think that is too much to expect. :(

My logs on deepworship.org didn't rollover in October, nor have webstats been run since 1am on October 1st.

I contacter Powweb support about this and I got this less than favorable reply which I am quoting below. What poor customer service in my opinion! This reply is not what I call "user freindly" or good customer service. Basically it just says to me "get lost", we don't pay anything for the webstats program and are no longer supporting running it automatically. You have to configure and figure out cron and how to run webalizer yourself. Good day!

If I wrote to people in this tone when I did Internet tech support years ago I would likely be reprimanded or fired... If Powweb doesn't resolev this an apologize for this awful reply I may cancel my account(s) with them.

Hello,

The webstats is an included feature and is not a cost factored into the
hosting fee. If you go to the web site for webalizer,
http://webalizer.net/newindex.html, you will see that this software comes at
zero cost. If we were paying for this software the cost would be factored into
the hosting fee.

The automation for webstats within our systems is in the process of being
taken away since it uses too many server resources on most accounts that don't
even use them. This is the only solution to resolve this issue so that people
who really needs stats, can run them anytime they want to. To control and run
the processes yourself, setup cron jobs within your web site. Here is a
tutorial:

http://help.powweb.com/tutorials/cron/setup.php

As an alternative, if you want better control with webstats we suggest you use
a third party webstats software within your website.

Should you have any additional questions or comments, please do not hesitate
to e-mail us, visit our support page at http://support.powweb.com/ or post in
our forum at http://forum.powweb.com/.

Sincerely,

Joe M.

Thanks for the offer. In fact, I have manually deleted my access and error logs over the past two days. I have my personal set up based upon a daily log rollover by PowWeb, as was the previously announced frequency.

My domain is spacea.info. If you look in my logs folder you will find a file .nfsA44594.4 which is the deleted access_log file from this morning. What happens, I guess, is that eventually Apache comes though and clears it out.

Is PowWeb still on a daily log rollover schedule, or what?

Cheers and thanks again.

Hey Eddie,

I just checked and mine still haven't rolled over. access_log starts at 01/Oct/2003:00:32:42 -0700 (the first hit) and goes through today. I haven't lost anything, hits just keep appending to access-log.

I know what the status of my logs is - they didn't roll over for the past two days. I just did a "manual" rollover so I could run awstats, but the log being 2X the normal size caused problems there initially.

The site I looked at was kittyangels.org on callisto.

I submitted a support request about this. I hope that this is just a bug and not a retroactively announced change, as I like having the logs roll over daily - makes my awstats job real simple and run once a day.

Thank you everone that has submitted your domain in, I will be looking at your issues first hand. In the mean tiime, please be patient.

As for 'woeger' reply reg: No webstats run - poor reply to my support E-mail.

I have read our Joe's reply form Support and I beg to differ on the style of is response to your concerns reg. WebStats. As far as i can tell, he carried the reply in a professional manor by stating all the facts to you with out all the fluff that usually comes from other support email that we are usually accustomed to. Your reception to the "get lost" additude is far-fetched on how we perceive quality customer service. We try to go out of our way to assist our client in a reasonable bound; however, as a old proverb once stated, "You can't please everyone all of the time", which might fall in to your case since we no longer Support WebStats. If you do a search regarding our WebStats through this forum, I'm pretty sure you will find that this has been a dilemma for us for a long time now and this is why we no longer support it.

We hope we have oblige to you our understanding towards your concerns.

Yes, I can now run webstats (webalizer) again via a cron job as instructed. It works, but my log files are not being rolled over.

Is there a way I can have the log files reset (cleared) after I run the cron job for webalizer so the log files don't just grow and grow and grow in size? Thanks! I would even like to delete the old log files automatically after I run stats on them if that is possible.

Same here, my access and error logs are not being reset and now include data for October 1st-3rd. (jeff321.com)

Just got awstats set up... hope my cronjob works!

P.S. I just disabled webstats in OPS, should I have done that? Will that affect the access logs?

Sorry but as long as you list webstats as part of the powerweb package, you must support it and manage it. If Im paying a monthly bill that includes webstats, you will provide support and fix any and all problems. That or remove it from the package page.

Well if they can just take webstats away that are quoted where we sign up, it makes you wonder if they are going to take other things away without warning. Maybe they will take 100MB of hard drive space away from us one day because they are running low. Or possible drop up down to a lower GB limit because they fill like it.

It would have been nice if there was some kind of warning. My stats with a cron job is working good on my new site (on www09) since webstats was not working there, but on Space until just a couple of days ago webstats was working great so I did not even bother with awstats there - but now I've got to hurry and try to get the cron job to work for it...... but since PowWeb will not tell anyone about the log rollover issue, I'm wondering what would be the best way to set it up? Ugh There is always problem with PowWeb..... :-(

Michael, see the "sticky" at the top of this forum section.

Personally, I don't care about the Webstats program. I found it useless anyway. But I DO need to know what PowWeb's new rules for rolling over access logs are. I can't set up my own stats analysis until I understand this. I've had a support request in about this for more than 24 hours now and have had no response other than the automatic acknowledgement.

If PowWeb isn't going to roll over the stats daily, then that means I need to run my processing more frequently (more load on PowWeb) and find a way to deal with missed entries when the log does roll over. But I don't want to have to guess - what's the new arrangement?

My sites didn't get rollover either. Causing problem with my own log analyzer.

Powweb is at the moment looking for an alternative to webalizer. Personally I do not like webalizer and we should encourage powweb to find something better with less trouble for them and for us.

This has been clearly stated by Andrew in his announcement some days ago.

The logs not rotating is not a policy change, it's a problem that we are trying to get to the bottom of. When we have any news we'll certainly let you know.

Thanks for the info on the sticky up top.
I don't really care which program they use for logging either. But I do want something. Whatever is easiest for PowWeb and does the job is fine with me. I use web stats to see how well my money is being spent on advertising only.
I'll just check back now and then and see what they come up with before I go with AWstats.

Well I am one of the ones that had been pleading with support to re-jump my webstats programme -- but finding myself with a few minutes of spare time this morning I attempted to install awstats according to the tutorial in this thread (admittedly I was attempting to show powweb I had tried alternatives before beginning round 2 of my pleadings) but wonderfully it worked!! Thank you to whoever it was that made such a great set of instructions that even "I" could follow --- and I have to say -- I much prefer the info offered by awstats over webstats

MichaelMcC

Ok, I saw where one of the admins wrote up a tutorial for installing AWstats so I did it. Went very smooth and it's working perfectly first try. Now to see if the crontab works tonight :)
Thanks for the great tutorial

mjp
10-4-03, 07:55 PM
Glad to hear that the tutorial is working. If anyone runs into a problem with it, or finds any aspect of it to be confusing, drop me a pm and I'll try to work out the kinks.

At first glance the tutorial may appear to be more complicated than it really is, so if you are on the fence because it seems a little intimidating, give it a try. You may be surprised at how quickly you can be up and running.

stevel
10-4-03, 08:51 PM
If one follows the tutorial's instructions precisely, you'll be disappointed because you'll miss a lot of entries - assuming the log rollover problem gets fixed. That's because it has the analysis run once a day at 2:45AM on the current day's log.

If the rollover problem gets fixed, then the preferable thing is to specify:

LogFile="/www/u/username/logs/access_log.1"

This chooses yesterday's complete rolled-over log.

You may want to vary the time the job starts - it wouldn't do for EVERYONE to run at 2:45AM.

Also, the version of awstats that PowWeb points to is old. Get the latest (5.9 as I write this) from http://awstats.sourceforge.net/ Select the ZIP file of the latest stable version.

tedsimages.com on mars. The access_log last rolled over at midnight on 1 October, and has been growing since then. I have never used WebStats, but download the logs to my machine where I run Analog.

mjp

Stevel,
Good point, I'll change that log path entry to access_log.1.

The 2:45 hour, however, was just for illustration purposes. People unfamiliar with cron jobs may get a better grasp of the idea with a working example, rather than an abstract row of asterisks. The intention wasn't to use the example, but yes, I suppose many may just cut and paste.

The original version of the tutorial had a link to the current version. It was suggested to make it simpler, hence the (only slightly) stale, simplified download.

Jeff321
10-4-03, 10:56 PM
Great idea, Steve. If you use yesterday's log then you will get all the data no matter what time of the day you run the cronjob at. This will work great... once the logs are rotating again :)

My log file on housatonicnet.com is unable to be deleted and is starting to get quite large.

Another weird thing is I created a directory above htdocs and I am unable to delete the directory as well. Using my ftp client, I select delete and it disappears from the file listing. (I refresh, just to make sure it's gone).

When I check back a while later (Not sure how long), it's back...

Roy
10-5-03, 12:48 PM
After you have done a delete on your access_log file and Apache has renamed it with a strange filename, immediately upload an empty access_log file to your logs directory. Eventually, the access _log file will start to build and the renamed, old one will disappear.

Your second problem may be related to having one or more files within the directory. First delete any files within the directory and then delete the directory.
