I want to install a forum on my website that can be accessed by anyone but where only people with a password and username can post. How do I do that?

There are many you can choose from. I think your best starting point would be to go here and to see the ones that tutorials are available: http://help.powweb.com/tutorials/index.php (then scroll down to 'Forums' located within PHP).
use phpBB www.phpbb.com
you can set permissions on each of the forums.. its really a very good forum solution. and its free!

I use YaBB (cgi or .pl) ... its pretty simple to set up and use. Its not the most comprehensive board on the net, but for starting off its perfect, also very easy to set up and moderate. Still has lots of features too.
Here is the one I use on my site...

At the moment I only have one board (you can have as many catagories and boards as you wish) and Im allowing guest posting which is also optional.

Yabb Gold is not bad... I prefer phpBB. It can do what you want and much more.

I think prefer phpBB myself!!!! Just I only setup YaBB and got it going so I didnt want to bother change it all again to php, even though Im more experienced in it all and want to upgrade... I will eventually though.....!!
