View Full Version : Speaking of Front Page.
IN the past 2 days or so I have heard some negative stuffs about front page. I am using front page atm and I a wondering if anyone can shed light on what the issues really are and how they affect pages. I am not using front page to upload anything. In fact I use CuteFTP Pro which is a god send let me tell you. The only reason why I use front page is because it's very easy for a visually impaired person to use.
The reason why I ask is I am wondering if I need to consider another editor with a visual capabilaty and if so. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions?

The reason I personally don't like FP is because of the extra code it adds to pages and the fact it requires extensions to be installed on the server.
I prefer Macromedia Dreamweaver. It adds some extra code at times as well, but it's a much better tool.
Again, these are just my opinions and should be taken as such! :)

Oh not a problem.. I value opinions,, that's why I am asking. You could say I am doing research. I don't like to change unless I HAVE to lol,, I HATE change.
I have heard that FP does need extentions to upload. That's one reason why I don't use it for uploading. It's a pain to even get that part set up.
As far as the code is concerend.. that does drive me buggy but I have gotten used to it. Has taught me how to recognize what I am seeing in the html. That's the only way to learn lol.

The extra code inserted by Front Page is insignificant considering we are well past 9600 baud modems. Strip it down and you save 10% on the load time on a dial up. I use both FP and Dreamweaver and DW inserts plenty of extra code as well, sometimes WAY beyond what FP can do with the same task.
If you can use MS WORD and need a simple editor, Front Page has a low learning curve. If you want more fancy goodies and are willing to put some time in then by all means learn Dreamweaver instead.
You don't need extensions to use Front Page. They are only for the bells and whistles. You can create basic websites with FP and FTP them with no problem. If you want to use some of the "bots" like feedback forms or uploading from inside FP then you need the extensions.
If you have multiple domains hosted on one POWWEB account forget Front Page becuase you will toast the extentions and lose the upload feature every time. You can still FTP previous FP webs however and have almost all features work just fine even with damaged extensions.

If all you're needing is a visual editor and you don't use FP proprietary functions, I wouldn't think there's any great reason to change to something else.

That would be cool if I could continue with the visual editor. Does FP interfere with page functions, or anything, ? Can the pages interfere with anything on a site? (just trying to varify some rumourse about it).
thanks heaps,, you are being very helpful.

I don't it interferes with anything in particular. At least I've never heard of that, but I'm not a FP expert by any means.
The only thing with FP is the fact that it adds more files in your webspace on the server. So you'll have to monitor that in OPS to make sure you don't go over the 15,000 file limit.
hmmm ok,, that makes sense,, and that's something I can do,, thanks :)
