View Full Version : What do you think of this concept I devised?

SimilarLinks.com (http://www.similarlinks.com/)

It's basically a place where you can plug-in you're own webring into you're website for free and optionally upgrade to SimilarLinks Professional which gives the fellow webmaster instant developer access to our RSS webring feeds.

The SimilarLinks Professional RSS webring feed thus allows the web developer to create a list of "Similar Links" which is equal to the List-all function of you're webring. allowing you to easily embed a list of dynamically generated List of Links with similar content to the content of your website directly in you're webpages.

Because no HTML references to our servers need to show with SimilarLinks Professional RSS webring feeds, you're site will be deemed much more professional by the search engines than by using a normal webring.

SimilarLinks.com about page (http://www.similarlinks.com/about.php)

My Website is not complete yet, however I would like some input into the idea and weither or not you think it's worth Continuing developing this website. I am dyslexic so there is bound to be typo's and mistakes all over the place.

If you spot any obvious one's, please let me know.

If I have missed out anything that should exist in the description of similarlinks.com, please let me know.

I know there are some obvious bugs in the free webring service part of similarlinks.com of which most are known, and are being worked on as we speak. The question is, is it worth continuing to develop this service, and would fellow webmasters such as yourselves be interested in paying a fee for SimilarLinks Professional?

If so, how much would you pay for SimilarLinks professional?

Have I explained the concept well enough on my about pages
and are there any obvious mistakes I have failed to catch?

Any help and constructive critisism would be greatly appreciated!

Kind Regards,
Tom Brett > http://similarlinks.com/

LOL... nice one.

It is far from pointless.. (quite the opposite infact).
Either I didn't explain it right, or you're too stupid to get it.

and so, I have updated the

SimilarLinks.com about page (http://www.similarlinks.com/about.php)

and corresponding SimilarLinks.com Professional page (http://www.similarlinks.com/pro.php)

With a far better description of the service, because it is probably the former of the two.

I have also fixed some essential create your own freewebring code bugs.. and so I'm just about ready to rock and roll!

Thanks for the feedback *ANY* more would be greatly appreciated! ..

Kind Regards,
Tom Brett > www.SimilarLinks.com

I fail to see how it's different from other webring services... Maybe you could explain that a little better. Or maybe I'm just too stupid to get it.

Spelling errors:

Everywhere you have "you're", it should be "your" instead.

"You're" is used only when the words "You are" can be sensibly put in it's place.

You should add a parameter in the cellpadding for your table (in the about page).. The text looks too close to the edge to me.. Less professional looking, I guess.

Thanks for the feedback crawdaddy79, most of the important information about SimilarLinks.com is on the SimilarLinks Pro page at http://similarlinks.com/pro.php

thanks for the input on the you're's being used incorrectly.
being dyslexic I nearly always get simple (but essential)
things like that wrong! (it's annoying as hell, because I just don't see that they exist .. those types of mistakes for person such as myself with dyslexia simply don't register when I'm proof reading for typos). it's weird to explain dyslexia to a non-dyslexic person .. stuff like that just dosen't register in the brain and is thus annoying as hell!

the cellpadding, is probably a very valid statement too.
I'll look into fixing that immediately! =)

and I'll continue to refine the about pages until they make some damned sense .. GRRR.

it's not you being too stupid to get it, it's me being too complicated with my wording and explanations!

I shall refine further, based on all your input.
Thank you all very much for your time! =)

Hrm, I heard somewhere that from the moment something is created, it's automatically copryighted to the creator of said artistic works and thus all you have to do is add a copyright notification to that said artistic medium. does anybody know of the validity of this claim? or is that simply just an old wives tale??

Is there any reason that you are using the 1.0 RSS instead of the .92 or 2.0? Since most modern browsers and news feed readers can read all formats it is probably not that important. I am just curious as to why you picked that format.

Nope, you have it correct - anything you create is automatically copyrighted. This didn't used to be the case, you'd have to put copyright notices on the material (like you did).

I don't know where nemt got the idea that there was a process to go through before you could even claim copyright.

OTOH, there can be advantages ($$$) to registering your copyright if you ever have to sue someone for copyright infringment (you can get punative as well as actual damages). For most people, this probably isn't necessary.

For way too much information on this, see the text of the Berne Convention (http://www.law.cornell.edu/treaties/berne/overview.html) - this is the international convention on copyrights (and inacted into law in most countries).

Calash, to answer your question : I'm just lazy.

I base most of my work off example code from somewhere (as most developers do) and that was the default ..

I might look into it at a later date,
but I just don't have the time right now!
