Tried to do a repair of XP Pro. All went fine until a Fatal Error window came up and said that there was a hardware incompatability. But it didn't say what it was. All that is connected to the MOBO is a keyboard, mouse and cdrom. Also one hard drive. Now I am back to a window asking me if I want Safe Mode -- Revert back to the last known good configuration - Or boot normally. None of these options will do anything but take me back to the same window. Booting with the Windows install cd in the drive doesn't do a thing. Any suggestions.
well, in a similar situation I'd probably want to wipe out windows and reinstall (which is probably why you titled the topic the way you did). If booting with the cd in the drive doesn't do anything, there're two possible causes.
1. It's not a bootable cd. This IS the Windows XP CD, right? Not some recovery cd or a, erm, 'gold' edition.
2. You don't have your computer set to boot from cdrom. To do this one, you'll need to get into the computer BIOS (del, F2, F1, or something else during boot) and somewhere in there you should have a boot sequence setting. It's probably like A:, C:, something at the moment. Instead, you should make sure the first boot device is cd-rom.
My personal guess is 2, but I don't know. I hope this helps.

I have the boot sequence setup to boot from D drive 1st.
The Windows XP cd is bootable. I have installed it prior to this problem

Boot order should be:
CDROM
Floppy
HDD
Do you see it attempting to access either the cd or floppy drive?

Go through your BIOS utility again, it sounds as if it is going straight to booting off of your hard drive without searching for bootable media in your cd or floppy first.
