View Full Version : Uploading images...?
I am having trouble with images...
After having inserted images to my Web pages using Microsoft Word 2000 as a Web-publishing tool and Previewing the Web pages with my browser, the images show up immediately ....
But.... the mystery to me is: after uploading my Web pages and their related file folders to the Webserver=(Powweb) and view the same pages on my Web address....they seem to take the same amount of time to show up on the screen as it did to FTP them to the server.....
What can I do to make my created Web page images show up faster...? I did re-scan the photographs to get the size smaller...
That did help some...but, not enough, and at the cost of quality...
I would appreciate any help on what I should/could be doing.
Gareth,
First, you must remember that ANY page will only load as fast as what that person's connection speed is. You cannot compare the speed at which these pages load off of your computer with the speed a modem will download them.
Download is the key word here, as each person comes to visit your pages they have to download the text and images that you have on that page before they can view it. The people with the higher speed access will get a much faster download speed than say someone with a 33.6 or 56 K modem connection. The speed at which you uploaded those images is "about" the speed at which anyone using the same type and speed connection as you will be able to download them.
If the web site which you are talking about is "http://cherokee-foothills.com/" , which I got from your profile...then I do not see anything wrong with the load time (download speed) of your web pages and I'm using a 56k dial up modem connection. And I did go to one of your photo pages to check file size of the images, and they are not that big.
The only thing I can see "wrong" is that you used Word to create your web pages and what Word does is embed all of your images into the page itself. This is ok as long as the visitor is using a newer version of IE, but if someone looks at your web page using a Netscape browser they will see nothing but the text of your pages. I checked using both IE and Netscape, and IE loads the page with images, but Netscape only sees the text and background.
I would suggest maybe getting one of the wysiwyg (What You See Is What You Get) type html editors and using it instead of word, you would have much less coding in your pages and possibly a faster load time as well.
Hope this has been of some help to you.
Thanks for your reply Jack.....sounds like a good answer to my problem for images....I noticed the same thing after going to my Web-site that it seems better might be re-scanning the images....I now feel confident that the other slow pages need to be redone......
I like your comment about using a WYSIWYG program....would you be able to tell me where to get that type of program ....? or what it is called....like what I right now is called: Word 2000...
Also...I am curious if you were able to hear any background music....or maybe you weren't at those particular pages....?
I'm thinking that is going to be the same problem.....
Anyway, I thank you for your help that youve done already.....
Gary,
I'm dropping you an email about this subject, take it off this multimedia board.
Okay (JJ)....I've got the "linked" Web-site located.... looks like I can stay busy right there for a while....lots of good stuff...Thanks again......
