I started hosting with POWWEB only a few days ago. WILL I BE REGRETTING THIS DECISION?

I've bought a piece of e-commerce software, and the service to have it installed on the server, thinking it would save me time.

But my vendor has been telling me about various problems, which I've managed solve--until now.

The install program gives a form to insert a list of variables, and the MYSQL server is one of the variables.

I put in "mysql02.powweb.com" but the install program is constantly saying:

Fatal error: Can't connect to the MySQL server. Press 'BACK' button and check database info again.

After the whole day of getting this error, I checked the forums, and was SHOCKED, SHOCKED! to see that there have been constant MYSQL errors since March !! And most of them occur on mysql02.powweb.com.

I've almost already decided to give up here and ask for my money back, unless by some miracle someone actually can do something about this problem, and assure me that my business won't go under as soon as I launch it.

Did you double check your user name and password? Have you activated your mysql account? I know those are obvious questions, but they get missed all the time.

Hi PIG...

Thanks for the suggestion, but I checked it all before posting. In fact, it works, as of Friday Oct 17th in the AM Eastern US time.

Looks like the MySQL server is back up...for now...but I'll be keeping a close eye on it.

I don't know when it went back up, but the fact that I can now install my shopping cart with the same variables I've been using, is proof that the server was down, and that it wasn't my flub.

Frankly, I've been managing a business site for a publisher of B2B newsletters (small company with earnings of $20 million a year) for over 5 years now, and work closely with our one and only web developer. So I'm pretty well versed in the workings of CGI script installations, and other things. I even code when it's necessary.

I've had another personal site for 4 years and gave it up to try this venture. I've run into all sorts of problems and dealt with various ISPs of varying quality along the way in my professional life as well as my personal site.

But if a hosting service cannot guarantee that mission-critical servers and apps will stay up, then I gotta be a little scared. These days, online store=some form of SQL + some scripting language + a server that can handle it. If one of these is constantly dying, there is no store to speak of.

I think this is the first time (atleast I am aware of) that mysql has went down on me.

It has been down all day on the 17th and has not been back up.

I can't even connect to it in the OPS so I definitly know it is a problem not on my side.

I sell computer hardware online and everything is stored on mysql.

This is not good for business for me!!!!

Hope they fix this real fast.
