It's been almost a week since we signed up here. I've downloaded WS_FTP twice, and am still not able to get the sight right. Is there anyone here with the knowledge to help us out (total newbies, shoulda gone with a host that provided page building software right on the web lol).
I am trying to upload a sight made in personal publisher, the 1st page is named index.html. If anyone has any trouble shooting ideas, or suggestions for me to get this page up and running I'd really appreciate it.
Unfortunately powweb told me that asking them about it was like asking the department of water to come out and fix a broken toilet........what customer service.
Anyhow, suggestions, ideas, and a miracle would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure you're uploading into the 'htdocs' folder.

I have, each time.
I wonder if my file is too big or something.....maybe I'll try a smaller test page.

When I went to your domain, I saw a directory listing of your htdocs. I saw the .pub file, but no index.html file.

hmmm, so how do I get that.......(sorry for being dumb!)
the first page of the pub file is named index.html, should there be an additional one.......for some reason it isn't there, but that might be too many cooks stirring the pot if you know what I mean.....maybe I need to re download something and start over?
crud I have to go to work, thank you for answering, and pleaaaaase if you have ideas keep sending them.
Thank you!!

What program are you using to generate your website (is "personal publisher' the name of the program)?
It sounds like it creates the site and stores it all in a file with a .pub extention. Is there a way to 'export' or 'publish' the site from within the program?

On the File Menu (of MS Publisher), select Publish to the Web. Save it to the desktop (for ease). Then use WS_FTP to upload BOTH the index.htm and index_files folder.

If, as tbonekkt suggests (and the .pub file type, too), that you're using MS-Publisher to do a website, I have only one suggestions:
Immediately go out and get another program and forget ever trying to use MS-Publisher for a website. It works fine as low-end desktop-publishing software, but it majorly stinks for doing web development!
If cost is an issue, you can find free programs that do more with less hassle then MS-Publisher.

I think the problem may be that you are uploading to the root of your ftp area. The root of your web served area is below that, in the htdocs folder. Nothing will show up on the web unless you put it in the htdocs folder. This is what tbonekkt was talking about in his earlier post.
It may be a little confusing for gnoobies, but having file space that is not web served is a major benifit for more advanced users (as I hope you will be soon). For example, suppose you wanted to password protect all or part of your site. If you put the password file inside your web served file space, some bozo might get in by just reading your file online.

I recommend Namo. Pretty good for it's price.
Website: http://www.namo.com/products/webeditor/
Where To Buy: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00007MALX/qid=1067292568/sr=8-14/ref=sr_8_14/002-5107449-6699238?v=glance&s=software&n=507846
One hint, buy Namo 5.0 first (it's cheaper) the download the upgrade here (http://www.namo.com/download/webeditor/upgrade_eng.php). You save $20

Tom, thank you sooo much, this worked.
Thanks to everyone else to for the suggestions and everything.
It's just a simple stable page for now, and still needs some work, but it's up and running!
