I like the idea of keeping the links in the same position on each page, and have removed them from the page they're on, hence the extra space.

oh! why not have the link removed? just the text there? or use # in link, your page wont go any where :)

Yeah thats an option, but I've found myself at some sites that I'm not familiar with, and I'm clicking a link wondering why I'm not going anywhere and it's because I'm already on that page. Happens.
