Hi,

I was reading it as you deleted it :)

Can you please post the details that allow browsers to show there's a problem with the server (I think it was nuke or something)

At least then when the server goes down visitors will get a decent message instead of...

Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Can't connect to MySQL server on 'mysql02.powweb.com' (60) in /www/c/cfavager/htdocs/db/mysql4.php on line 48

Warning: mysql_error(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL-Link resource in /www/c/cfavager/htdocs/db/mysql4.php on line 330

Warning: mysql_errno(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL-Link resource in /www/c/cfavager/htdocs/db/mysql4.php on line 331
phpBB : Critical Error

Could not connect to the database

Any help appreciated...

Yeah, nice going.. covering powweb's tracks for customer service. We had a pretty good time delay in service loged in those messages. Lucky for me, I have them cached! LOL

So, where were we? mysql check scripts? flash games?

Hi Eddie,

Thanks for looking into this for all of us, is there any way to make you and your coworkers more aware of outages? It seems like the support line is always busy and email take to long to get replies. I know your working on the problem and I for one am glad to see that it's being looked into, however the current contact procedure just doesn’t seem to be working very will, I mean even a forum Mod is unable to do much more then just create a post and it took over 3 plus hours before your or anyone else on the staff know about the problem. Even the support help person didn't know there was a problem after receiving a large amount of phone calls complaining of the problem.

Again thanks for looking into this problem.

Kyle

Not sure what you want.. this?

mysql_ping
(PHP 4 >= 4.3.0)
mysql_ping() - Ping a server connection or reconnect if there is no connection

Description
bool mysql_ping ([resource link_identifier])

mysql_ping() checks whether or not the connection to the server is working. If it has gone down, an automatic reconnection is attempted. This function can be used by scripts that remain idle for a long while, to check whether or not the server has closed the connection and reconnect if necessary. mysql_ping() returns TRUE if the connection to the server is working, otherwise FALSE.

<?php
$connect=mysql_connect($db_host, $db_user, $db_password);
$db=mysql_select_db($db_name);
if(mysql_ping($connect)){
echo "your database is online",
} else {
echo "your database is offline",
}
mysql_close($connect);
?>

Sorry, once they are removed, I cannot get them back. However, as user:'aehare70' had somewhat stated, if you have them still cached, you can reposte them back if you wish.

I promise this will not happen again. :)

I received a reply from tech support:

"Hello,

Our administrators has been notified of the problem and is in the process of
rebooting mysql02. The server should be back up shortly. We apologize for
the inconvenience this has caused you.

Thank You,

Winston A.
Powweb Inc.
http://powweb.com"

So I emailed again quite awhile later to get an ETA and find out what exactly the nature of the problem is, this is the reply I got(mind you, these replies are over an hour apart AND the original reply is still attached to the email!):

"Hello,

Our administrators has been notified of the problem and is in the process of
rebooting mysql02. The server should be back up shortly. We apologize for
the inconvenience this has caused you.
Thank You,

Winston A.

I'm glad they take the time to even read our emails before replying :rolleyes:

Nothing like a canned response!

I don't really care what the problem is, I just know that my site going down 3-5 times per week is not the way for me to keep visitors nor is it a way for Powweb to keep clientele.

Even sadder when Powweb offers a refund instead of fixing the issues once and for all.

Please Powweb, hire a Sql consultant if no one there is qualified to fix the issues!

If you use phpnuke, I have found this very helpful. When your MySQL server is down, it will display a message with your logo and test telling the user that there is a problem, and that the server will be back shortly

You can download it here at nukecops.

Calling their offices after business hours start results in a recording stating "Our office is currently closed"

I have no problem with people wanting to maybe get a cup of coffee after arrival, but at least make sure there are no emergencies before doing so.

I've had to call in the AM quite a few times now and they are never there on time, and I'm not the first to report this.

Well, I think that will be all for me. The price is great, but the uptime is just unacceptable. I moved my SQL to the mysql02 with the promise of better uptime, and more reliability. I just don't understand why a large, reputable company does not have the ability to maintain a sql database. I realize there are bad scripts out there, but other hosts just don't have these problems. I am not going to turn this into another complaint thread, I am simply stating that my limited server needs can no longer be met here. My renewal is up in two months. Thank you for the year Powweb, the forums are a great feature. The problem is mine never stay up.....

What server did you move from?

I was offered to be moved to sql04, and I refused as it seems that one has as many issues.

Shuffling users around isn't a resolution.

the highly ironic thing is that today, I am moving from Powweb to another host (reasons: as stated by others above - Powweb are too unreliable). I just needed to take a backup of my database and download it offline!!

I can't even do that!! Talk about bad timing!

I remember a few months ago -- having this problem quite frequently. they were going to make a change and it was going to be a long time solution. Was fine for about a month (maybe more) and now it's down all the freakin time again. annoying.

I give this two thumbs down.

So much for 97% uptime...
this seems to happen almost once or twice a week anymore. Not only that, but damn, the sites are getting slow...

All except for their site. These forums and their www.poweb.com never go down. Wish they could give the CUSTOMERS the same SERVICE.

I have a somewhat growing forum on my site that uses the mysql database (of course it is the one that is also not working). I even have a link to it in my signature, see below, but when their database service is down it just makes me look like a webmaster who can't figure out how to install a forum properly because my viewers have no way of knowing what is going on. Does Powweb have some sort of money back guarantee!!??

Completely unacceptable!
Just got off the phone with support who told me they weren't even aware that mysql02 had an issue until I called! I asked if they monitored the support calls that come in and he said they did. When I asked why the emails coming in about the server being down weren't noticed he said they weren't a 24x7 shop. He then said only a couple of emails had been received. Is there an certain level of emails that must be received before the problem is considered realistic?

He said an admin just got to the server and determined it needed to be rebooted, and it would take 45 minutes! I asked what else needed to be done and he said that was it. I questioned why it would take so long to reboot and he said that is normal. I've never seen ANY server take 45 minutes to reboot unless it had some serious, serious issues!

He seemed rather argumentitive and defensive with me when all I did was ask questions that any paying customer would ask when their service is down. Not what I expected from a representative of a company I am paying.

Wouldn't you figure, I just start relying on MySQL, and the server goes down.

So this is a regular occurence? How many incidents in the last month?

I guess 99.7% uptime refers to their web hosts only, not the db...

Try this web host search engine - $10 Cheap Web Hosting Directory

Or take a peek at these guys - Sorry no posting of other hosting companies

Do a search here in the forums for "mysql02" and you'll have PLENTY of reading to do! For that fact, do a search on "mysql0x", with x being the server of choice. The track record as of late just isn't very good. The communication has been even worse.

I informed admins, not support. It's very possible that admins did not convey the outage to support. Could be for many reasons: expected downtime, etc. I can't really say further because that's all I know.

I'm sure admins are working on it and will get it back online ASAP. I know that's not the best reassurance, but it's all I can personally give.
