That is to make my access logs update properly!

I have had trouble with them ever since I joined, everything has worked so well apart from statistics. There are so many of these post going around and I dont see why powweb dont fix the problem or atleast try and find the problem.

http://www.knightsoflight.net/cgi-bin/awstats.pl

There is no way a site can drop from 100 views a day to 2 and then 70 and then 0 and then 86 to 3, it is no coincident.

I have installed awstats 5 times and I have done everything right, your installation guide is actually wrong in one bit as you have to include a "www.". Aart from that the installation guide is good.

I know that this fault is not because of awstats, for the reason that webstats did this too, I even got a manual updater for webstats and it still didnt work, I have d/led the access file and the past 7 day ones, they do not include only 2 ro 1 visist, more like 130 visits.

I know that I get more visists than 2 a day and it doesnt matter in the long run and the running of the site. I want it corrected because I want to know when people visit my site each day and month, therefore I know what people liked etc.. and search notes etc...

I want a properly answer powweb, hopefully your response will help 90% of the people here.

There are tons of other free logging/tracking scripts out there. I know alot of other members are not really fond of the provided webstats...so they install their own. You can do whatever you want to it then...just a suggestion:cool:

I have seen such complaints, but can't figure out what PowWeb could be doing that caused them. For my own site, the stats look good and consistent.

There is definately a problem. For the first few days of November mine shows fewer hits than I know even I have been to my site. And far less than my site counters. And all hits are in hour 0 - which is not right either, as I know I have been there at times other than midnight. The stats (at least for me) have gone flakey in the past month or so.

But I would not rely on someone else's stats any more than I would rely on some else's mysql backup.

If it is something you need - do it yourself the way you know it is right - stats, backups, what ever. IMHO.

But having said that . . . you would think the provided stats would be OK . . . and for me they were for many months . . . until recently.

Have you pulled and examined the actual log files themselves, or just looked at them as filtered through some analysis program?

I have not done anything. I just activated webstats in ops and looked at the wbepages provided. That is how it is "supposed" to work. You are not supposed to have to dig through log files.

As I said . . . I have not spent time on this. Just noting that the feature as provided by powweb with no modifications does not work properly. It used to . . . but now it does not. Could be the logs themselves or could be the generated pages.

The only thing I have done is add htaccess/htpasswd protection to the webstats directory . . . which I did when I signed up here last January.

Stevel -

OK . . . went and looked at the logs. There is data in the logs. So it appears that the webstats pages are not being generated correctly.

So now you have peaked my interest in webstats. Do other people use another analysis script to anaylze and report from the logs rather than using the Powweb provided webstats?

Give me the lowdown on this. As long as I am this far into looking at it I may as well implement something that works.

Do you then just ignore the Powweb provided webstats pages?

I have went round and round with admin about this issue and the only answer I got was "We do not support them, and have a nice day :) " I have both Webalizer and AWStats set up with cron, but I really only check AWstats. It seems to be working fine...... at least for now.

My question is though: are the acess logs supposed to overrite themselves each day or are the supposed to keep writing a new log for each day. ie. log_1, log_2, log_3 etc. I have found that this is what mine do and if I do not physically delete them they just start adding up and use my disk quota. Any info?

So now I notice there is a whole forum for this topic . . . how long has that been there? Never noticed it before . . .

And I see from the first post that Powweb does not support the stats anyway - so why do they offer for you to turn them on in ops? very strange.

Is it just me or does it seem like the admins/mods in the forums stay away from these topics. It is not the software uploading the stats wrong it is the logs and the script times to wload at powweb give us.

ALL I want is for my stats to be correct. Can't powweb atleast give us a reason why it doesnt work?

Webstats used to be supported and the FAQ still refers to that. If you do a quick lookout in the forum you will ifnd answers. Easy alternatives have been placed here:

As a mod I have to say that all that "I" can do is offer suggestions and the rare solution to others problems. I can NOT do anything about how Powweb runs their servers or their webstats (or lack of).

When I see a post that I think I might be able to offer help with, I reply. Otherwise why reply if the person has already done all that I could suggest. I don't need to post just to see my own words in a post :)
