Hey tbonekkt, this is the first time I didn't upgrade immediately. I played with it at an Apple store and agree expose is very cool but not $129.00 cool. What other benefits have you experienced? I have a lowly 500Mhz iMac and while I'm tempted I just can't make the leap...

Not a MAC expert, but would there even be an advantage to moving up on a 500mhz iMac? Thought that most of the improvements in Jaguar were more aimed to the upper end / 64 bit bahemouths.

Well, my Pismo here is the PowerBook G3 Firewire model (400MHz, 320MB RAM) and the entire interface is just simply faster. No doubt about it. App load time appears faster as well.

Can't wait until I install it on my G4 PowerBook Titanium tomorrow at work...

Yours have the lightup keyboard?? I must admit that's an awsome feature.... last one I was using had that and all the bells and whistles. I just wish they made them a little bit more affordable - mind you, not Dell flimsy cheap, but a little more affordable wouldn't hurt.

I think, if anything, pricing / product targeting is what hurts apple the most. Take the iPod.... what's the cheapest model? Like $299? The Dell knockoff sells for about $50 less. Is the iPod worth the extra money? Certainly (IMO), but not everyone sees it that way.

I just bought the one one with the illuminated keyboard for my boss and wow it is pretty nice.

I wish they'd come down in price too...maybe more people would buy them.

I've never even used an ipod (outside of CompUSA at least) so I don't know what sets them apart from the Dell, Rio, etc.

Personnaly I think it's easy to use and looks awsome..... it's got style. Rio's haven't been big anymore around here - either you've got an iPod or a Dell one or you don't. The Dell one is fairly bulky and kinda difficult to use.

Point is - Apple's got great designs and they put out revolutionary stuff but they don't fully follow through in pricing and targeting (IMO) and then a company like Dell comes along, rips them off, takes advantage of the lapse in Apple targeting and profits from it.....

Man I want a powerbook after all this!

Totally agree with you. There will always be the Mac *freaks* who HAVE to buy everything Apple ever puts out. And Apple targets that group way too much.Originally posted by bdoc
Man I want a powerbook after all this! I seriously am thinking about getting the newly revised 12" PowerBook. From my experiences, never buy a first revision Apple puts out. Now that those 12" have been revised, it may just be time....:)

My son has one and I'm envious as hell. With our airport network he strolls around or sits outside while connected to the net via broadband.

Maybe bdoc will loan me his G4 PowerBook Titanium as an alternative :)

Hi Fred, I still have my PB 160 from '92 but gave away my SE...

My little SE is still running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, as a small dbase server in the company I retired from.

I don't know of many products, of any kind, with that kind of reliability.

It is also incredible to me that I've never bought a Macintosh because there was anything wrong with the one I was using. It has always been an upgrade for more power and speed.

At the company, where I was the art director responsible for 10 Macs at any given time, I always donated the old Macs to charity organizations and as far as I know, they're all still in use.

I'm using a 3 year old G4 desktop and a 1.5 year old G4 Titanium Powerbook right now. Now that I'm retired and the big corporate budget is history, I'll probably wait a while before I jump into a G5. hee hee.

I do want an Apple 23 inch Cinema display, but dang they're expensive!

My brother still uses my old SE as his fax machine. A non-profit I worked for was the beneficiary of companies that donated retired Macs. When I left we had a dozen or so obsolete Macs that were as trouble free as anyone could hope for.

Havent switched from 10.2.8 yet. Question- How does the new OS run on your G3? I have a G4 powerbook (only 400mhz though) and I am a bit leary of running it.

I haven't switched yet either. I hear Panther runs faster and smoother on older machines like ours but can't see $129 worth of benefits myself. I also hear there's some problems with older printers and that the fax capability is causing some problems. Fax alone, if trouble-free, could justify the upgarde in my mind but until I hear it's rock solid I can't see any advantage.

Well I installed it on my G4 400MHz and it's much faster.

It's just blazing on my G5 2GHz DP!!!

WOW...

It's even more amazing on this machine than on my PowerBook G3!

Do you think it would be an improvement for a 500Mhz iMac G3? If so, how significant an improvement is it?

Being the 'techie' that I am, I'm always wanting the new thing.

But I don't know if the $129 price tag can be justified by the average home user.

Does this help?

My son, also a graphic artist, installed Panther and said he had problems with his printer. I remember all of the pain with my Epson Stylus 1200 Photo printer; waiting for an updated driver, etc. Will Panther also require a new print driver? If so, I may never upgrade. Epson originally said they weren't going to release an OSX driver for my printer because it was too old. I wrote them an old fashioned U. S. Postal Service "snail mail" letter of complaint. My printer is less than 5 years old!

Later, they sent me an email with a link for downloading the new driver for my printer. I don't want to go through that again.

It's the one thing I hate most about computers and peripheral devices. Everything is so quickly out-dated. My Epson works perfectly, for my needs, and I see no reason to shell out more money for a new printer that I don't need just because Apple comes out with a new system every few months.

Grrrr!

Yes, I think I'll wait and suspect Fred and I agree that the gains may not outweigh the headaches. I checked it out in the local Apple store and was very disappointed to see the page scrolling in Safari is still jerky, even on their new machines.

I think i'll wait.
