View Full Version : I can't access my site
For some reason, I've not been able to open our website since late last night - it keeps saying it can't find the server. We have three other sites hosted through Powweb and all of them load just fine.
I've tried getting there by http://www.mikescovel.com and just mikescovel.com - and all with the same results.
Of the four sites, this is the only one that people actually place orders on so I need help soon!
Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

Your site is pulling fine for me:
the fine art of Mike Scovel
"His pioneering style is a distinctive hybrid endowed with a satirical bite of comic strip, yet rendered with fine art technique. The appeal of Scovel's work reaches far beyond the American West."
Just checked, and I find your website ok
"His pioneering style is a distinctive hybrid endowed with a satirical bite of comic strip,
Why would it not load for me, especially since the others come up fine?

Have you tried clearing your browser's temp files (cache)?
Have you made any changes to either the A or C name records? Or made any recent changes to your .htaccess file?
I can access your site, but ONLY if I use the www Won't load without it and will not load using anything else besides the www

I cleared the temp cache files but that didn't help. I haven't made any changes to the site in over a week so I haven't changed anything.
I don't know what A or C name records are.
I was at the site yesterday afternoon but when a customer asked me to verify the link because he was having problems last night - I couldn't get it to load either.
I'm not sure what to try next.
I just tried to open the site through FrontPage - thinking I could just reload it but I get an error message that says,
"Cannot find a web server at mikescovel.com on port 80. Please check to make sure that the web server name is valid and your proxy settings are set correctly. If you're sure that everything is correct, the web server may be temporarily out of service."

Sounds like a DNS problem. Here's a little thing to try:
Assuming you are using Windows, open up a command prompt (either Start -> Run -> type in "command" or Start -> Run -> type in "cmd"). At the command prompt, type "ping www.mikescovel.com" (with out the quotes) and hit enter. It should return with:
Pinging www.mikescovel.com [<ip address here>]
The ip address shown should be 66.152.97.226. If it is anything else, then either your computer has bad DNS information cached, or your ISP is giving you bad information.
First, reboot your PC.
If that doesn't solve the problem, call your ISP and ask if they've had any DNS problems as of late.

Agreed, it is definitely a DNS issue. After thinking some more, it seems to be ISP DNS caching. Check out this (http://forum.powweb.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=29290) Announcement by Sgeine about the renumbering of PowWeb's IP addresses.
That's what seems to be the problem. When your ISP updates/clears/renews its DNS cache, more than likely the problem will be resolved.
In the meantime, try clearing your computer's DNS cache. At a command prompt, type:ipconfig /flushdnsWhyTanFox - love the quote by mugwum in your sig. :)

Your site does not load in New York......
I don't think it's ISP DNS caching so much as PowWeb's nameservers being schizophrenic about what the IP address should be. What I am seeing in general is that ns3.powweb.com reports the new IP addresses and ns2.powweb.com reports the old addresses. Some servers are no longer responding to the old addresses, hence the problem.
Since I see this with my own domains as well, I am going to complain to support too.
I think you're right. I just spent half an hour with tech support form my isp and they're working on it from their end. The problem is as always .... no matter who you contact, they tell you its the other guy's problem.

Stevel is right, and the blame is all on powweb...

I've notified admins to hopefully get this issue escalated as I'm sure there are more affected by this than those that have posted.

www.goldentriad.net down :(
Ok,
So I believe Andromeda's A RECORD ip's are no longer valid. They used to be that of the original ones set. I'll see if the other admins can add this ip back so that it resolves... this should globally fix problems with users on this server.

Nick, www.goldentriad.net is back up and running but the forum www.goldentriad.net/forum is not. The site cant connect to mysql02. We had a issue with this last night http://forum.powweb.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=29359
Thanks
Nick,
I hope it is not intentional that NS2 and NS3 should not be serving the same A record values and that this will be fixed. If PowWeb wants people to stop using the old IPs, it would be good if PowWeb itself stopped using them.
Well I am glad they are finally getting to the bottom of it. I tried to report it HERE (http://forum.powweb.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=29324) but was basically told it was my fault. In the end I called my isp tech support and had them manually change the ip# to my dns so I could access my site. I assume the reason the site kept going up and down was because they were getting a different ip# for andromeda from powweb when they updated their dns.
