I'm a newcomer and a novice, so please forgive me. I've read just about everything on PowWeb about uploading, but I still have have some questions. It seems I have the option of uploading with either FrontPage or via FTP. Do I have to decide on doing one or the other? From what I've read in the Forum, it seems I can actually do both - but then again, there are warnings about publishing with Frontpage and how the FrontPage extensions can interefer with FTPing. I'm already familiar with FTP (I've built 3 websites for work with Dreamweaver - but the one I'm building now is in FrontPage - a new experience for me). The FTP Tutorial says I should make sure a number of extensions are uploaded as ASCII. Currently I use WS_FTP95 at work and only .TXT is designated as ASCII. I'd hate to make changes to this since it works wonderfully for my 3 websites. Should I just go with FrontPage and its extensions (which I'm not familiar with), or should I FTP because I feel more "comfortable" with it (even though I have my worries as mentioned above). No rush - right now I'm waiting for my site to be propogated. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

PLEASE upload with your FTP program without Front Page extensions to avoid problems. Also, Front Page publishes backups which consume alot of server space. There are no benefits to using FP extensions of which I can list.

Hi packerfan
If you are already comfortable using FTP and don't use any of the Frontapge features that need to be published with Frontapge extensions installed ...... I'd use FTP.
Then again, if it is a small site that you wont be using any scripts etc, Frontpage publishig is probably the easier way.
ps: anything you can do with FP, you can do with other better options. Keep coming here and we will show you how or at least point you in the right direction.
Basically use Frontpage as one of many tools in the future.

It's all FTP D'weaver, FPage, NOFusion etc simply have an inbuilt FTP application. These often add junk code to your pages, FPage being the worst offender. I to prefer to use a pure FTP program. However some of the more complex features and extensions the programs generate eg: hotspots, nav mapping, screen doors, site mappers etc, can get messed up if they aren't uploaded by the program.
So it's six of one half the other. If you do upload with FPage log into OPS and enable FPage extensions first. You can always clean it up later with your pure FTP proggy.
Good Luck :)
I will forgive you for being a packer fan. Vikings rule. :D
In wsftp in options...extensions tab you want to add the following extensions to the ascii upload file
.txt
.model
.pl
.pm
.threads
.cgi
.conf
.dat
.file
.shtml
.htm
.html
.htpasswd
.logfile
.htaccess
.c
.h
.perl
.style
.setup
.tmpl
.ini
.js
.cfm
.php
.old
.css
.readme
.msg
.ubb
These are the most used though there are some others from some specialized apps.

Hmmm wonder how that got in there. Thanks user00265. I added a few more that are probably useful.

Many, MANY thanks to all of you who replied to my questions! One of the reasons I decided to go with PowWeb is because of the great forum help from folks like you - even from a Viking fan! Who would have thunk it! The site I'm working on is straight and simple for the time being - just text and photos. So I'll go with FTPing vs FrontPage. Thank again and happy turkey day!
