View Full Version : logs not updating
I have been running awstats without a problem since we had the major dramas some months back.
Occasionally I have had the missed day but this time I have had 5 days in a row without an update.
Nothing has been touched from my end.
Is there a problem with the logs updating?
Thanks Aussie.

You may have to check your log files. Try copying and deleting the file which may be too long.
Aussie,
FTP into your logs directory (folder) and see if your access_log files are dated so as to reflect that they have rolled over each night.
You should have 9 access_log files in the logs directory. access_log is the current active log, access_log.1 is the past days log and then it goes on with access_log.2 - .3 - .4 - etc for each previous days logs.
Also, if you are running a crontab with logging turned on, then check your cronaw.log and cronaw.err files to see if there is a problem.
Hi JJ
My last download was on the 03.12.11
The logs have rolled over to current date but still won't download.
The cron error log I can not understand as I have never dealt with these before.
Would you mind having a look at it for me please?
You can download it at http://www.lochsport.com/DSPF.err.txt
I would appreciate your advice.
Regards
Aussie.
That looks like your cronaw.log file, not an error log. And it looks pretty much normal.
What time do you have your crontab set to run? If it is set too early, then often the logs may not have rolled over by the time the cronjob runs. The logs roll over between midnight and 2am Pacific (California) time.
Thanks for looking JJ.
That was the cronaw.err file.
Crontab Time is set as follows: 55 2 * * */www/l/lochsport/cgi-bin/awstats.pl -config=www.lochsport.com -update
I have put the following files up if you would care to have a look, maybe they will help.
http://www.lochsport.com/cronaw.log.1
http://www.lochsport.com/error_log
I am still unable to get a download and nothing has been changed from my original settings which were working fine.
Cheers
Aussie.
I have just copied and deleted access_log.6 - 7 & 8 as these were the last files down loaded before it stopped. Just a thought that there may be a problem there. However I will have to wait for the next download to find out.
I am also considering doing a manual update to see if that will fix the problem. Will let you know the result.
Cheers
Aussie.
Some things to try:
Double check the permissions for your awstats.pl, make sure it is still set to 755
Try renaming your conf file to just awstats.conf without your domain name in it.
I've attached a crontab.txt file here with a minor change to it. The one you posted had a missing space. This one was created in UltraEdit so I know that it's a pure text file.
Thanks for that JJ, I will update now.
I was able to do a manual update but it only gave me yesterdays stats. How can I retrieve the missing six days? I still have the logs .
Aussie
(did anyone ever tell you you are a bloody genius?)
Made those changes.
awstats.pl was set to 644, changed it to 755 which I am sure that was what it was before.
Is there anyway powweb could have changed that? Or is it just a gremlin or something?
I have set it all back to automatic so will have to wait until tomorrow to get a result.
Would like to get those missing stats if possible.
Thanks very much for your support.
Cheers

JJ, maybe you should offer your services - webstats installed for $50 to save your sanity! ;)
Hey Yvette, I wouldn't install webstats again if you paid me $50 :o
Nothing but trouble and doesn't produce very good results.
But I agree with you that JJ would be worth the money, but not until after mine is fixed ;)
Cheers
Aussie.

Powweb doesn't change permissions, but if they done an update on your server it's possible that they were changed by the update (not on purpose).
Also, it has been said that some versions of WS_FTP_LE does not do/or report Chmod correctly.
Sorry, past logs can not be added back into your stats.
You can leave the manual update feature turned on if you wish. The auto update via crontab will still work.
<off topic (sorta)>
Yvette,
I'm already insane and bald so Awstats is a walk in the park for me. <insert insane laughter>
I've installed Awstats with cronjobs on 7 different sites and 5 different Powweb servers and have never had a bit of trouble. (other than my own syntax errors).

You truly are amazing. I think you have a testimonial for this service if you can help Aussie. ;)
I didn't try to install them yet, because the webstats "ususally" work for my sites. But I hope to do so. When I do, I will let you know. I never tried a cronjob, but a b***job, well that's another story. I AM married and only my husband can tell you about that. :D
Gee, I need to get out of the office. :p
"Try renaming your conf file to just awstats.conf without your domain name in it."
Hi JJ,
Just thought I would let you know that the above is a no - no.
Cancelled out my stats and told me I have not had any. Changed it back again and every thing was okay.
Cheers
Aussie.
PS: "JJ" is my nickname in normal life so it feels strange using it for someone else.
I use awstats.conf as my configuration file. But I could believe that if you did so, the statistics history files would not be recognized. Perhaps they need renaming too?
It's back to the drawing board. No auto download again this morning.
Can't figure why something that has worked perfectly for 2 months would suddenly stop when nothing was touched.
Gotta be something more to it.
Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.
Sad :(
Aussie.
Some things to check
check the size of the history file, should be something like awstats122003.yourdomain.com.txt and should be in the same directory as your Awstats files.
Check the permissions (Chmod settings)
awstats.pl - 755
history files - 666
conf file - 644
dnscachelastupdate (if you use it) - 666
If the history file is very large, you might try renaming it or deleting it and then see if your stats will update and start a new one. You would lose previous stats doing this.
There are 3 history files, the oldest 2 were set to 666 but the latest one was 644. (changed it to 666)
dnscachelastupdate is 666
awstats.pl is 755
conf file was and is 644
History files are not very large, old ones are larger than current one.
This is so annoying, I appreciate your help JJ
:(
Well, maybe you've found the problem then. The history file HAS to be 666 so that it can be written to.
Will cross my fingers for ya :)
Thanks Mate, if you ever reach our shores look me up and I will buy you a few hundred Aussie beers, you will then float home. :D
I did a manual update this morning, but have another question.
If I set the conf to update manually will it still auto update? Cause when I first tried it a couple of months ago it wouldn't Auto while set to "1" I had to set it to "0" before it would auto.
I am leaving it to manual until tomorrow to find out maybe!
Cheers
Aussie.
Yes, you should be able to have manual update enabled and still have the cronjob work in auto mode as well.
I have one site setup that way and it works just fine :) However, other than for testing purposes it serves no purpose. Because if the auto update runs correctly, then running the manual update will add nothing to the stats. Both are using the same log file "access_log.1" which is static and only changes once per day.
It does come in handy if the logs happen not to roll over on a given day.
Success! Success! Success!
Stats downloaded this morning and with the manual op switched on.
Problem must have been the history file chmod.
JJ that offer of a truckload of beer stands plus a hoilday by the beach with good fishing. So let me know when youv'e got your ticket to Melbourne and I will pick you up from the airport.
Thanks heaps mate. It's guys like you that make the web a pleasure to use.
Cheers

Glad they are working for you Aussie, and thanks for the offer.
But I don't think my canoe will make it all the way to Australia. Since the airlines are so narrow minded and won't let me fly the plane, I won't ever use them.

Aussie, Congrats! You had the patience, determination and will to correct this and the ability to follow directions. :)
JJ, Good for you! You had the patience, determination and will to help and the ability to give directions. :)
Never ask my husband for directions. He will tell you to drive 3 miles, make a right, drive until you see a light (this could be for miles), make another right, .... until you drive a while and end up where you started! Sometimes he will give real directions - while I am there, because I will interrupt when he makes up stories. :D
:(
Boo hoo!
I spoke too soooooooon.
No download this morning had to do it manually.
Back to the drawing board. Think I'll open the whisky bottle first.
Hey Yvette! Your husband sounds like a normal man. :p
JJ did you ever think of trading in your canoe for your own plane?
Run it on alchohol and serve 2 purposes at once.
Got any more suggestions for this f***** ### --- " thing of mine?
I am going to go back to the original instructions and check everything step by step and see what pops up. (no Yvette not that!)
Cheers
Aussie.

Had one once, till it got like me...too old to maintain.
Check your permissions "again" and make sure they are holding as set. What are you using to set permissions (Chmod)? If the settings have changed, you might want to give FileZilla (http://sourceforge.net/projects/filezilla/) a try.
Now, did it update when you done the manual? If so, then it's a problem with the crontab and not the whole sheebang.

I still think the problem is the crontab, since many of us are not very experienced with it. Maybe JJ can help you with just that part to see if that is the thing that is causing the trouble.
It updated manually no probs.
Consider that when it stopped working nothing had been touched it just stopped.
I have been out all day so will check permissions etc now.
BRB
Just checked permissions.
Every file had gone back to 644
I am using ws_ftp pro
I have reset the permissions so here we go again. Will wait until tomorrow to find out.
Cheers
Aussie
**** Have another beer that will fix it ****
I've had problems with some versions of WS_FTP Pro not actually setting the Chmod values correctly. Again, you might want to give FileZilla a try. Hey, it's free and it doesn't install into your registry. Just unzip and run.
Do you have any other cgi scripts that you are running? If permissions keep resetting, maybe you need to contact support and have them do a check on your domain settings.
Also, make sure your etc directory is Chmod to 755.
Everything had reverted back to 644 this morning.
They were fine last night.
It may be ws_ftp so I will use FileZilla which I unloaded last night and try again.
I can't understand this as my other cgi scripts are running fine.
I have no trouble with awstats on my other sites but then they are hosted elsewhere.
I also have not had trouble with permissions on my other sites so this problem is unique to this one.
Probably some thing obvious that I can't see. Oh well I guess that's the life of computer operators.
Thanks again JJ.
Cheers

It may be a server thing, because this happened to one of my client's sites, but no one else's hosted by PowWeb. It was an account opened around August 2003. The permissions changed only once though, so I thought maybe PowWeb was making changes to the server or something.
Aussie,
Set the Chmod using FileZilla, if they change again after that then you'd best contact support and have them look into it for you. It really isn't normal for permissions to change on their own ;)
Still had to update manially this morning.
Permissions were all ok. FileZilla did the job I think. Looks like I will stick to it. Thanks JJ.
Only thing I will do now is revert to the auto setting in the conf file and see if that fixes it.
Well it will all wait till after xmas now as it's xmas day here in the morning and computers are a no no all day.
Merry xmas guys, I hope your xmas brings you peace and happiness. :)
Cheers
Aussie.
