Hi guys,

I would like to back up my entire web site and was curious if there is a way to compress the entire structure into a single file to download?

Read this thread ... halfabee has a php script that will do this for you.

If your site is entirely php gzip works on Powweb servers.

I don't remember if it was tripod or geocities... who it was; but I know there's a free service that doesdo what you're talking about. As far as I know though, it isn't an easy thing to do (if it can even be done) here on pw.

A lot of times, things like that are run by shell bots and pw doesn't give shell access.

Perhaps someone else can clarify further but I don't think its possible.

lol I see we were all typing at the same time. I figured I would be nice and get "something" out there.

By reading what you were asking and then seeing the other replies, if you're running a basic site, I'm not so sure what you want to do is possible. PHP is a whole different can of worms to be playing with.

Is there any way to do it without a php based site?

I run a PHP forum and a couple of other scripts but mostly basic site with javascript and CGI stuff eg. guestbook, counters, formmail etc...

I'm having a play with that PHP script for the forums, as I already have a backup from the admin panel provided.

Sorry guys one more thing, are file permissions preserved when backing up or do I need to change permissions again on .pl files located in the CGI BIN etc... to their previous state when restoring?

Yup.. they usually are for me. Of course you should check em' though.

In contrast, I would note that it is good (better IMO) to always keep/retain the latest version of all normal site files on your local system and upload additions and modified files as needed, plus do your backups locally via DVD, extra disk, tape, etc.; and do backups of any databases too.

**HalfaBee's php script for backing up databases server side is very nice, fast and efficient; two step process for me now to backup and then drag a copy to my local disk to archive on DVD+RW**

**noting also that you floss the ones you want to keep :) **

That's the magic word.. Backup seems alot don't bother to.. and they're the first to cry foul when they lose the lot. Nice to see some do do regular backups.
